So, how does Nexon/SD plan to keep players?

Once everyone’s got everything unlocked, what do the devs plan to do to keep people around? Will more mercs be periodically released? Cosmetic skins? More maps?

I feel like this is a pretty basic question, but I haven’t seen anybody address it. The reason I ask is that my friends and I are having tons of fun with this game, but we’d all hate to see it get hamstrung by a short lifespan due to shortsightedness. Ten bucks for a new merc only gets you so far - eventually everyone is gonna have them all unlocked, then what - Boosters? For what? 1000 credits for a case takes about an hour of playtime for me to generate, and I’m not averse to just let the chips fall where they may to get a rarer loadout card - so that throws out elite cases. I’m not naive enough to think that EVERYONE is like that, but I’ve got to think that most people are.

Basically, this is a game that I could see myself spending some money on in the future, but right now it’s late future is just too variable. So yeah, what exactly - if anything - is SD doing to ensure the future of Dirty Bomb?

You mean you don’t play for the gameplay?

(glamorousSapling) #3

Sure, but games get stale over time. I’ll be interested and play it for a while, but eventually, what’s SD got planned to keep me playing? What are they doing to make this a game that I want to come back to?

Bad games get stale over time. Good games live forever, see Quake and CS. Though they’ve had new iterations with some improvements.

From my understanding (so if someone has more knowledge, please correct me) they will be peroidacly releasing new mercs, however due to the nature of the game I (personally) doubt it’ll be like dota or league of legends where we end up with 100s of mercs. I expect we will get a good core of mercs and then new mercs will either stop or be extremely slow to release. However, that is speculation mind you.

I’ve also heard they plan to release new loadout cards from time to time which means new combos, possible new weapons and new perks so that could be fun. Then there is always the fun rng grind of trading up to your favorite gold or cobalt variation, which of course always is nice for collectors.

They will be releasing a new game mode soon which currently is in testing. This mode has some mode-specific maps if I am correct so chances are there will be more maps in the future of the game for more than just the unreleased mode. it only makes sense after all. So, now worries. I think the game will be around for awhile and it will have enough content to keep things from getting stale.

That said, it is a competitive, objective centric FPS. If the gameplay itself doesn’t entertain you, no amount of new will ever work to keep you around  Anyway, welcome to the community and enjoy your stay.

This is where they failed Brink imo, the additional content was long in coming and had to be purchased to use. I hope they know better this time. New mercs and cards are all well and good for making money but it’s new maps that will really keep the game alive. I worry they’ll prioritize them lower or make us buy them.

In the near/mid future we’ll be alright though, at least 3 new maps are being tweaked atm along with another half dozen mercs.

Well look at how TF2 went after the F2P update. Lots of cosmetics (not that I want that, it became so horribly alien to what used to be a nice clean game with a few choices in headwear that suited the mercs), occasional updates for balancing, and community made maps being made official. The cash just rolled in because people were content with the gameplay and trading. None of this cost the player a penny.

The latter I would love to see, or even just community servers and maps being run on those.

New loadouts, new mercs, new maps, new game modes, to name a few. In a few of the streams they have indicated that they intend that the game will continue to grow and evolve as the years go by.

If you need unlocks to enjoy the game, then you’re doing it wrong. Why are people so obsessed with one of the worst things in shooter games? CS has no unlocks, people play it for years. Quake has no unlocks, UT has no unlocks. People keep playing those for years. Then CoD came with 50+ levels, unlockable stuff, and now every shooter need them or people say “game isn’t worth being played”. If the game can’t keep you playing it with its gameplay, stop playing it.

Some people do need the carrot and that’s fine in my view. Some people in CSGO barely play CSGO but they love the market involved with it. Some people love the chance to win skins. Others like gambling them. So CS has a lot of carrots…it’s just not the MMO-style of carrots that CoD and BF have put into their games.

So some people enjoy a game for different reasons than other people. I’m the type where I’d still be playing DB if there wasn’t a progression system. But I can definitely understand why some people would need that type of system.

(XavienX) #11

I wouldn’t worry about this so early OP.

(glamorousSapling) #12

I make no bones about this. Look, i’m not saying that I personally need unlocks - I like DB because it’s a fun arcade shooter that I can squeeze in a few matches of between school and the gym. The gameplay is fast and relatively simple in that you don’t have to do a LOT of research into characters to be a decent player at, unlike other F2P games (League, DoTA, WoT, etc.) I’m merely asking what SD is doing to keep the players that DO want additional unlocks, as they’re likely to make up a pretty big playerbase. Again, this is a fun game, and I’d like to see it have a long and prosperous life. Basically my fears are compounded coming from Monday Night Combat, which had AMAZING gameplay but little content - and the game had a short life because of this.

(avidCow) #13

I know, right. But they need to release more maps. And fix the other ones.

You guys talk about gameplay but after 260 hours im bored the gameplay. I’m bored my 25/1 kd. Pub servers full with level 6 players, min level 10 servers full with level 10 players. This is my first fps game i don’t even play counter strike but i can’t see rivalry on db. I’m doing everything in my life for challenge, for improve myself that’s how i enjoy. I’m sure many of you saw me in EU servers my username is Azat i was playing +10 hours a day but i paused because boredom.

I started when open beta started and i wonder where is everybody i saw in my first week, or second week, or third week? All im see is new players but new players stop playing after 6 level. How many level 20 players on rooms maybe 10. it means only 10 players continue playing from first or second week. I know +500 posts guys are +40 level good and loyal players and you don’t have to say you like gameplay if you are playing +6 months. But dirty bomb needs new system for new players who stop playing after 6 or 11 level.

(avidCow) #15

So play in Dirty Cups?

You sick fuck.

(B_Montiel) #19

I don’t know how paper clips can improve the game longevity.
