I don’t get you OP…
You say you don’t follow so called sheep who love the games that get praised and sell like hotcakes… but when a game comes along that tries something a little different and isn’t praised by the people you seem to be set against and also has a very strong underground following from day one, you don’t want to get behind that either…
Let me just mention a few things:
The average score for Brink is 70-80% from what I can gather, and the only reason it didn’t shoot higher is because the reviews were made pre-patches. If you consider that most games that are rated higher follow the generic standard, and that 70-80% on average for a game that is a work in progress (IE: it can only get better with future patches) is a respectable score, then it might appease a little of your worry.
The game feels /very/ different to your standard shooter, and takes a little getting used to, so many people who don’t want their set ideas challenged won’t even give it a go before bashing it.
I’m playing the ps3 version right now, so obviously I can’t get online, but - and I’m extremely difficult to please when it comes to FPS - the SP is a tonne of fun even though it’s has flaws. I’ve been playing it for a few hours straight, and I’m not getting tired. If SP is this good, then I know MP is going to be wonderful.
Of course I’m in no way against a demo, but I reckon you should take a little leap with this one and get in on the ground floor. My prediction is that, aftr a few patches and some DLC, this thing is going to gain some pretty decent momentum.
