Sniper 1-hit-kill?

(Kendle) #41

As someone who’s currently idling away the days till Brink playing DOD:S on Sniper only servers I hope there is a decent Sniper in this game, and I hope it’s a 1-shot kill, or at least 1-headshot kill.

I come from an RTCW and ET background, and once upon a time would’ve sneered at 1-shot kill weapons (indeed I most certainly did get into a few flame wars on the subject back in the day), but having played other games since (DOD:S for 3 years and UrT for 2 year) I realise now how short sighted those arguments were (the “skill” argument being the most baseless), so I most sincerely hope Brink isn’t 2 teams of SMG’s and the only variety comes from the classes. I want variety in weapon choice as well.

Use a shotgun or a mingun…maybe even a Grenade Launcher.

Or just buff a light rifle. Considering you only get points for damage done it doesn’t matter if you get one shot kills as much as if you can get a one shot suppression. All it takes to complete an objective is suppressing the enemy to the point where they can’t stop you. Light rifles handle that role well.

As I actually played the Support class in DOD:S when I played it competitively (which used a BAR or STG44 Assault Rifle) I prefer accuracy + damage over rate of fire, so I’ll be looking at the Assault Rifles in Brink first I imagine. I just know from DOD:S that a 1-shot kill Sniper is not as over-powered as many people seem to assume.

Whatever whoever assumes, SD has stated they want to minimize the whole camping sniper locking down an area of the map. When that occurs, the camping sniping is the only guy having fun. They want to make sniping a support action, rather than a lone wolf “look at my k/d ratio derp” action.

The trick to making snipers fun is that you have to give the sniper a way to be effective while giving non-snipers a way to counter it. If the only way to kill a sniper on the enemy team is to out-snipe her, then that causes people without interest or prowess in sniping to be frustrated at their inability to deal with their long-ranged foe. On the other side of the coin if the sniper is the only person on the team not getting kills because her gun doesn’t do enough damage then she might as well just switch roles.

Making sniper rifles do less damage helps keep it fun for other players while making each point of damage give experience to the sniper keeps it fun for her. It also means that if the sniper snags the killing blow that she isn’t robbing a teammate of their experience. Games with higher health also benefit snipers because it means they can assist their teammates without over-killing their targets. If your sniper rifle is a one-hit machine then it makes more sense to pick undamaged targets. If the opposite is true then that means the sniper has to pick targets that are busy engaging her teammates and it forces snipers to be team players rather than one woman teams.

From what SD has claimed and what it looks like in the videos so far Brink seems to encompass all three of the aforementioned aspects and it’s probably the first game to do so that I’m aware of.

Fair enough, I just wanted to make the point that in a 10 year old game called DOD, which has a 1-shot kill Sniper, that doesn’t happen, and never has. The trade off is the Sniper has a really, really slow rate of fire (bolt action rifle), meaning it can be counted quite easily, especially if map design doesn’t provide choke points that a lone Sniper can exploit that way.

I have however just been reading up on the game (tbh been pretty much ignoring Brink till now, really don’t want to do the hype / speculation thing, did enough of that with ET:QW and Wolfenstein 2009), so it seems there won’t be a decently effective Sniper, so I suspect there won’t be any Snipers at all, it just won’t be worth the disadvantages if your target can walk away from a hit.

I’m going to be a sniper, and I don’t think the no-OHK is going to be a problem.

Just pick your shots to hit the primary threat and soften them up for your teammates, or hit someone who’s already wounded.

Who says it doesn’t take skill? That’s an idiotic thing so say… It takes just as much skill as Sub Machine Guns. You just have to know how to use them.

Also, whats with the insult? “learn to use skill”? Do you constantly get owned by snipers to the point that you now get pissed off at a simple thread about sniping?

I think it kind of did. I didn’t see any other info on it, and so this is the only other place I know I’ll find a good answer instead of the vague info on the website. What doesn’t need to exist is the extra two pages to this thread since the question was answered on page 1…

Hate to burst your bubble, but H0RSE doesn’t get distracted - he also travels with teammates and will play as a Heavy, so attempting to pick me off, will have you having to deal with whatever number of teammates I happen to be with at the time, plus I will have boatloads of health regardless - and I have really good aim.

(Chili Squirts) #51

Well, unlike most games, Brink doesn’t really reward traveling as a one man army, so I will more than likely have team mates as well, and considering that I too play as a heavy, it will likely come down to who has better aim with an AR/SMG (with me having a slight advantage with a buffed gun). May the best man win :stuck_out_tongue:

So has H0RSE spoken, so shall it be.

Disclaimer: Do not take everything here as 100% final. I am simply taking various sources of info and compiling them all into one. I am providing this as a way to share my findings with others as a reference, to get an idea of what the game is about and how it plays out. I have tried my best to check sources and remain as accurate as possible and although they have reached beta, the game is still in development and things can still change.

Which means me.
