Smoke, Fire and Explosion interactions...

I have started to notice more recently that certain abilities are either being almost instantly countered or being removed by a team member. With friendly nades and smoke knocking off the Molotov fire from the EV. The Smoke and Fire combo is also causing some issues with players accidentally knocking away smoke or people throwing a smoke into fire.

I feel these forms of interaction are doing nothing but causing huge frustrations currently. I feel like I am one of the only people in public using my fire to knock away smokes and stuff but I also feel my team are extinguishing my fire far to frequently though poor play. If Stoker and Redeye had like 3 abilities it would not be such a problem but currently it just makes the abilities feel quite random.

Obviously you could look into simply removing the effects from team mates or simply remove the effect all together. I am not against this kind of thing in general but I do feel that massive AoE abilities clashing is not the way forward.

Also, I understand there are quite a few issues with the Molotov and Smoke already that will be adding to the feeling of frustration but I am finding that accidental interactions are my most common frustrations while playing as a Stoker.

Quickly, I know its not exactly the same but as I am on the subject of accidental team troll, I would like to talk about the Smoke in general. Too often I am having smoke explode at my feet from a team mate because he wants to hide inside it as a Redeye. This is a huge problem for me on maps like Underground and Victoria where the defensive positions are small. Also even when the Redeye throws a smoke towards the enemy they often just block their teams view almost completely. That is why I would like to look at the idea of making the enemy cough while in the smoke and make them spotted randomly while coughing. I still don’t think its perfect but right now the ability to troll with a Redeye is just too great.

Good post… I also did not know you could stop fire with smoke… I did know theres a few bugs with smoke but not that it countered fire… I also know medic paddles do not work in smoke which i think is bs…

so when attacking you need a red eye against the fire of the stoker to protect the EV :stuck_out_tongue:

This is an issue of player education, not bad mechanics.

These are exactly the sort of interactions we’ve been asking for, don’t want to see them removed just because players haven’t realised they exist yet, give it time.

I don’t like that these are just pulled from CSGO and a complete system hadn’t been thought out before hand. I also want to see counters blend across certain sets of mercs, just perhaps involving different means of execution.

like I say in the original post…

Remove the team effect at the very least… I don’t want no noobie nader messing up the whole team because she spams nades onto our smoke and/or fire.

I just got a match where fire and smoke seemed to be going on at the same time, without cancelling one another.
Just not sure if they were both from the same team or from opposing teams (this last point might have some importance, or not)

It takes a few seconds, and sometimes it bugs out and doesn’t work, but that is a sick looking screenshot!

Agreed. God forbid you’d need to figure things out over time.

The issue is, unlike many other mechanics, this is a negative that does not effect you directly…
Actually, not hitting the EV with your Artillery strike does negatively effect your XP gain…
Not clearing a smoke that is your way also is a negative to you…

So not only are you asking people to learn something that directly goes against the games reward structure/feedback but you are also asking people to care about something that does not effect them negatively. I can sense that these kind of interactions are going to be responsible for a big chunk of the games toxicity when the general public start playing. This is not even mentioning that these interactions happen on abilities with large AoE on maps that are actually very enclosed. It is almost inevitable in a public environment that abilities are going to clash regardless of peoples efforts. I actually have no real issue with smoke being blown away, I just don’t like the idea of fire being blown away due to the cool down, merc that has the ability and its a damaging ability. If anything explosions in fire should spread the fire and/or make the explosions more deadly, not remove it.

Friendlies shouldn’t be able to counter your abilities, at least not with FF off.

Cancelling effects should require an animation as well. Fire should ‘flare’ the smoke or something. Otherwise people will never know what actually happened. Doesn’t have to be fancy, it could discolour the flames or smoke for a moment. Just to show what’s going on.

Whilst on the subject …could you also have a look into the effect in general for smoke, flashbang, etc. Sometimes when i’ve been dead and speccing someone, they’ve been hit by smoke and i’ve respawned with my vision obscured for a good few seconds, the same when i’ve died and then respawned straight away only to get shot because I can’t see which way to move
