slstyle sun possible?

(The5thHorsemen) #1

styles light as a q3 sun possiable?

(Target) #2

5th is it possible to speak to you on ETG at some point?

(ydnar) #3

Yes, you can have styled sun/sky lights.

This can be used for some pretty rad stuff like lightning effects. Use sparingly though, or your shader count will go thru the roof.

Hmmm…

Radar anyone? But that’s a dynamic light because when I go r_dynamiclight 0 it turns off… Hmph.

(TheJediYoda) #5

aye, ain’t a light style on radar, you can see it when viewing the the lightmap.

(Emon) #6

Any way you could create an extremely slow fading lightstyle, to get a cheap day/night cycle?

(ydnar) #7

Yep. That would be a way to get night/day cycle.

(The5thHorsemen) #8

that’s pretty much what I was after…

:disgust:

(Emon) #9

How would you make the light pulse so slow, though?

(chavo_one) #10

use a sine wave with a big amplitude and a really small frequency.

(Emon) #11

In the lightstyle shader hack?

(onu) #12

We’re talking a corridor map, right? Because for a realistic day/night cycle on a terrain map the shadows would have to move…

(Emon) #13

We realize that. However, for my use, it won’t matter. You don’t really notice the non-moving shadows in Vice City, for what I’m doing you’ll be too busy to notice or care.

(Helk) #14

I hate to dig up old topics, but I was searching for a way to do Day/Night cycles recently, is their any way to have a styled skybox too? i.e by the time it goes to night, change the skybox textures from a horizon to stars (think stalker game)

furthermore, is there any way to have this moderated from code (im working in ET), or does all the timing have to be set up perfectly in the shader scripts

Thanks in advance

(WadeV1589) #15

No idea how it would affect the game but it is possible to overlap 2 skyboxes and on one apply a sky shader and on the other a night shader. I don’t know how you’d get it to fade in though as the fading is done per stage, not over the entire shader.

What about using the sky portal, that could work…

(Helk) #16

well would it be possible to have the skybox (day and night) be part of one larger texture?
then pan them across or something like that relatively fast?

I remember in this old mmo I used to play ‘neocron’ they made the global fog get extremely dense so you couldnt see 5 feet infront of you, then did a skybox change, then lowered the fog again

I think anyways
