Skybeams / Searchlights

(thore) #1

k, first off, i’ve found the thread search lights - light styles ? by smurkin but it seems to be about
searchlights in Q3, at least that’s what mindlink mentioned. since i don’t want to mess things
up, here comes a new thread - again dealing with searchlights, but this time in ET

in the above mentioned thread siliconslick advised to have a look at ammo depot map which
has 2 searchlights included, so i’ve downloaded the map file, finding the lights to be simple
func_rotatings with a alphatex applied for the beamy look. actually this isn’t what i’m planning
to do, since i don’t want to have my lights just go round in circles. i’d rather like them to
swivel back and forth… the way you would wipe something with cloth.

i’ve found a tut on leveldesigner.de using a misc_spotlight entity targeting a camera
spline path. that would be nice to do, the downside is: i can’t find a misc_spotlight. i’ve
updated my entities.def with ‘rtcw entities in et’ one can find somewhere around here
in forums… but still no misc_spotlight to be found :frowning:

the spotlight is not intended to illuminate anything… there’s just this lightbeam dancing
in the air…

get me started

Well, you could try func_pendulum? To make the light and it’s beam rotate.

(thore) #3

you wouldn’t be able to interrupt/ halt movement with a func_pendulum afaik… AND you will be
somewhat limited with the movement the same way you are with a func_rotating… anyway, i will
keep the pendulum in mind, it might be useful, although it’s not really what i’m looking for. the
camera spline path would be much more suitable… if i just could find this nasty misc_spotlight…

Try pming Erik-FTN then? He’s the dude who made the RtCW in ET entities, maybe he can help you?

Here’s Erik’s page:

But I haven’t found the misc_spotlight in his entities.def.

i have found some nice searchlights, including ones that are moving. in a previously written pattern.

my question now is that can i make a searchlight, which a player equips and then he can move it, like in an mg nest?
if yes than one possible way to mess with the scripting of an mg nest and somehow make it fit to the searchlight?

(FireFly) #7

I’m afraid not…at least not without a mod.

(Flippy) #8

Isn’t it easiest to use the faceangles script command? Turn the lightbeam+spotlight into a script_mover and make it move using faceangles… I think you can even use accelerating/deccelarating movements…

Hi there

This can be done but It’s not going to be good looking nor very playable and u can’t mount it, u need to have a number of different buttons to control it.

coarse schematics:

2-4 separate buttons ---- scripting ----- scriptmover or model or both w attachtotag

hmm

there are several way to do it, one of the more complicated would be tagging a lightbeam model to a scriptmover and put the scriptmover on a spline. Then u can have 2 buttons, forward & backwards to move on that spline. You need to script the rolling as you move down the spline.

I’d put some time into trying to build a rotating (upside-down) pendulum… as far as I remember you can attach stuff to the end of the pendulum… omg that might be a really easy way to have eg smoke/stuff moving, a really big & slow pendulum w smoke/model/whatever attached to the end…

Well for what it’s worth, I’m starting to forget ET scripting a bit by now…

well here are some prefabs and if you scroll down you can see a searchlight (if thats what ur looking for)

but lights can be turned into a script mover, cant they? so you would loose the corona…
