Size limits.

Hi all I did a bit of testing today and figured someone might care to know this info…

What I did was test what the limits of the player are as far as jumping, steping without jumping, etc… here is what I came up with.

Highest Jumping Size 62.5 Units
Highest Step Size 18.5 Units
Losest Clearance Standing 72.75 Units (above ground)
Lowest Clearance Crouching 48.75 Units (above ground)
Lowest Clearance while Prone 40.75 Units (above ground)

(This testing was done in Vanilla ET if that matters at all)

Granted I only lowered the Grid size to 0.25, but I didn’t feel like messing with anything lower than that. I would assume not many people work with less than 1 Unit very often (other than maybe lining two things up together).

On a side note - It appeared than Duck-jumping did nothing to benefit the height.

So there you go, maybe useless maybe not

Chruker tested a few things before at Chruker’s game section: Mapping sizes.

Maybe some values should be added?

In general, I’d stay away from sub-unit sizes.

Highest jump height is variable, depending on the players FPS, and in etpro on the values of b_fixedphysics, pmove_fixed etc.

I would agree, I just wanted to know

Even from a dead stand still?? The reason I started this little test was to see how high I should make my “trenches” so the player can still jump out of them.

So If I set my max FPS to like 15 I will jump slightly lower, even when not strafe-circle-sprint-jumping?? Of course with Fixed physics everyone will jump based on the same Fixed FPS amount, but that can vary per server.

I guess it dosen’t matter that much, around 40 - 60 Units should be ok I would think.

Yes. See http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Quake3/FAQFPSJumps.html

Really, the number of interest should be what jump can be made at one of the “bad” numbers. You can get up a 64 unit crate with good FPS, so 60 is probably a safe number if you want everyone to be able to do it with no problem.

Well I went ahead and tested with a setting of

com_maxfps 2

I could still make it over my 62.5 Unit wall. I could not make it over a 62.75 Unit wall with default FPS setting.

I’ve read/seen that before. I’m satisfied with 60 units, but might test 64 units with different framerates, just for the fun of it

64 requires a bit of skill, so if you want that make it 64. Everything less is easier of course.

I wouldn’t call com_maxfps a skill :moo:

You do also have time the jump so you hit the peak at just the right point, but it’s nothing a few minutes of practice can’t take care of if you have the right jump height.
