Single Player vs. Online

(Herandar) #61

Splash Damage have been saying all along that SP and MP are exactly the same. I don’t think that is something to be disappointed by. You make it sound like something has been taken away, and it hasn’t.

I took issue with the word ‘genre’. It will not be the end of the genre. SP and MP aren’t genres; FPS and RPG are genres.
This wont end well, there will be alot bad publicity coming from reviewers and other gamers, especially console focussed people.
they’re not used to that kind of games.
Your estimation of the intelligence of video game reviewers and we ‘console-focused’ gamers is a bit alarming.

(Nail) #63

I’d agree about the reviewers, but I know the general console gaming public will see the difference, after all, most online reviewers are quoted more often than believed

Thanks HORSE and others for answering my question about bot skill levels. I would like it adjustable so that we scale them down for the strategy and tactical discussion sessions.
I prefer nameless bots. Otherwise they just point out that they’re fillers and not real people in a mp game.
real competition and cooperation…
Black Ops actually pulls the names off your friends list and puts them on the bots so that it feels like you are playing with your friends even when you are not. It is pretty funny. I think it is a cool way of doing it.

Perfect Dark N64 had completely customizable bots - from appearance to “personality”. This allowed for some of the best MP gaming I have ever had. We skinned one bot to look like a man of the cloth, and then gave him “Peace Sim” personality. He would just run around punching people and taking away their weapons. We made another bot a Dominatrix with the high heels, and gave her the Kami-kaze personality (always seeking vengeance on him who last killed her). Etc. etc. It was hilarious, actually.

I don’t expect it for Brink, but being able to name bots, or having them take names from my friends list would be cool, as would being able to assign “personalities”. Ultimately, however, I just want to play 8v8 humons everyone. But for strategy sessions, scalable bots will be very handy.
splash damage/bethesda should have marketed it as an multiplayer FPS with integrated story.
and not this whole “blurring the lines” stuff.

Im afraid alot of people (including reviewers, especially console centric ones) will be greatly dissappointed with the game as soon as they find out that the “single player” mode is just multiplayer with bots.

I dont know why anyone would enjoy the SP more than the online in brink,
it’s like L4D… there is no difference between online and offline, except for the fact that playing with real humans is more enjoyable (for most people) than playing with bots…

they should really point that out, before thy piss alot of reviewers off…
They got slammed by reviewers for ETQW not having single player. They are taking lessons learned and applying them. The single player may disappoint reviewers because it’s not what they expect, or it may be something we don’t expect as well. Or, it may be what we expect (and I expect to like it more than “regular” single player) and the reviewers love it. We’ll find out in 3 1/2 months.

Just shows how ridiculous critics are. One of the most popular games around (TF2) has no single player. It’s ridiculous. Not all games should be all things to everyone.

And 3Suns, I don’t like the idea of bots taking on my friends’ names. If I have a n influx of friends join, how do I know who is real or not?

My thoughts exactly, seems lame.

Would be a good way to test them out - see if you can tell if it’s a bot or really your friend playing.

(LyndonL) #69

Actually, I could easily tell. If they came up and started meleeing me and shooting me from behind to make me freak out then it’d be one of my friends or me lol.

(beute) #70

I regulary visit gametrailers.com.
I read the forums everyday, I watch all the reviews.

I see it everyday, I dont have to estimate anything, really.
I never said it is true for every single console gamer…
you’re reading these forums, It’s clear to me that you’re not that kind of console gamer Im referring to.

I hope Im wrong, seriously, I want brink to succeed, it’s my most anticipated game of the year, but I think alot of people will expect something that isnt there in its general form.

(Seyu) #71

Nothing new, happens with all games. People tend to mix up expectations and wishes.

(Apples) #72

MP indeed, I would also gladly buy a cheaper game with mp only in it

Anyway I cant install the new .NET stuff in my pc, so I’ll wait till I can buy my new rig.
