Basically a team couldn’t have 2 rhinos, or 2 of any other merc.
Should the one of each merc per team rule be enforced in ranked?
Possibly for team ranked, but if it’s a bunch of solo players there could be the possibility that there aren’t enough Mercs to go around, if everyone just happens to have a lot of Merc overlapping.
Actually, I suppose they could switch in lobby, but they would still have to be able to figure out who does the switching.
Unless we have every merc available at any given time, I say no
Because otherwise this WILL. NOT. WORK.
If we have every single merc available, for free, it could work.
And even then I’d probably say 2 of each merc.
Ranked does more fit into “glorified pubs” than flat out “competitive” category. Random people with rather random skill level (getting better all the time in terms of that) joining together and having a 5v5 clash of wits, skill and even luck involved. So non from me for class restrictions.
Whether or not this is a good idea. You can restrict ranked to people who own at least 5 mercs? (including the current rotation mercs)
There are 2 sides to the argument here. I understand that nade spam or 5000 proxies or 347 bushwackers with their turrets may not be the best thing to encounter especially in ranked matches. It gets overwhelming if the enemy uses mainly 1 fairly overpowered merc which becomes even more overpowered when in clunks, for example rhinos. In public matches, if there are 2 rhinos on the enemy team, my team finds it hard for some reason to do anything because not many know that aiming for the head is better etc etc as I’m only a level 10 so far, so the people in my matches are usually fairly new. In ranked battles, this situation is even worse, as fighting against these mercs in groups would be even more of a struggle for the other team.
However, if you think about it, every merc has it’s weakness. For example rhinos can be easily countered by nades from nader or fragger, or even fletcher. Or simply shotguns to the face. If you have a well balanced team, with medics and maybe a sniper here and there, some good fire power with bombs and engineers, then it would be better than a team with spamming abilities. Of course they’re more annoying, but if your team co-ordinate well, then you would succeed. Restricting players would only lead to negative feedback to the game. Eitherway, it would also restrict your team. If someone is a really good proxy player, and they only allow 1 when there are 2 candidates for this role, it would cause a lot of unnecessary conflict between players.
Overall however I think it might be a fairly good idea. Because there isn’t only 1 engineer, there isn’t only 1 tanky merc and there isn’t only 1 healer. So, if the people can co-operate and quickly develop a plan of action, then it would be easy to have a well balanced team role wise without having the need to repeat mercs (so like having a sawbonez and pheonix rather than 2 pheonixes). This would also prevent the enemy team from being overpowered based on 1 specific power that can counter the negatives of mercs simply because there are like 5 of them, such as the fact that rhinos are very slow but due to there being as said 5 of them, it wouldn’t matter.

And with the somewhat new (only started playing comp again recently after last update) 15-30 second timer (from memory) its even harder to to get your mercs set up especially with a group full of randoms since I have no-one to play comp with atm…
Don’t know why they added the strict af merc selection timer to comp as it was fine before. Yeah you might of had to wait for that 1 troll to lock in, but hey it gave everyone a chance to use team chat to sort out what mercs to choose.
Mini Rant-Off Topic
Also everyone is using that terminal exploit where you can get upstairs on first objective before the attackers capture the forward spawn, so now every pub game I will use that exploit until it gets patched and be as annoying as possible with it as it has no right to be there and only encourages camping, as for comp that map is now constantly unchecked. If it don’t get fixed no biggie, I’ll just play other maps instead, but pubs I have very little influence in what map I want to play so yeah…/End-MiniSlightlyOffTopicRant
fuck no this isnt even a game rules its just a made up rule by the organisator of tournament to ease the game if i could i would totally remove this rule from every tournament ever it has no sense
Considering the worst case scenario where everyone on the enemy team brought the same 3 mercs, it would be possible to limit the enemy team to having a max of 2 of each merc.
This could probably work once the merc amount we have is doubled and there’s something like a pick/ban system.
Right now you would probably just force your teammate on some other merc to fill the same role out of their comfort zone if you were to pick “their” merc.
In the future, I would probably like to see something like this, but as of now, no.

I meant yesssss
