Should spotting ability define recon merc?

(TheStrangerous) #1

This is quite bugging me. Usually how people define recon merc in this game, is simply “he has a spotting ability” argument. But should it really define recon class? Phantom, for instance, doesn’t have any spotting ability, and many others, including me, denied him fitting into recon category.

Should this stigma go on? And so should the next recon have spotting ability? Perhaps there are other traits defining recon category, other than spotting?

I personally refer the recon class as the class thats meant to harm the enemy team without damaging them.

Vas can see them through walls, Aimee debuffs, Redeye blocks their vision and Phantie has EMP.

Phantom needs a spotting field and EMP nade

Phantom should spot in some way.

Actually a really great question.
Personally I don’t really like spotting as a mechanic.

I think recons could be more fun if they were like debuffers. Nothing too major to ruin the gunplay.

Phantom’s EMP vs deployables, Redeye’s smoke vs vision, Aimee’s snitch for increased damage.

Next merc could have like poison gas, makes the screen green and foggy or something.
Or ammo corrosion nanobots, again throwable and spreads like gas but doesn’t disrupt vision.
Or just some silly traps, something with essentially no damage, but with harmful effects.

Depending on the strength of the effect, I’d think most of them should be ranged, as to keep them more viable on offense.

Recons, IMO, should ideally be defined by their use of long ranged rifles and abilities that indirectly affect enemies (spotting, SNITCH debuff, vision control from Redeye, EMP). They could probably also have a decent overlap with Assaults in some ways (Phantom).

Just my two cents.

I think a way to make Phantom fit into the recon class more comfortable would be to grant him the ability to spot for a short time if enemies are in the radius of his EMP

Recon literally tells you everything you need to know, Intel, giving enemy positions, which is crucial in this game so you aren’t going around a corner and getting screwed over.

Aimee’s SNITCH does 1 damage.
So Aimee is not a recon because she is damaging the enemy /s

When was the last time you’ve seen a SNITCH kill someone.

@Lord_Coctus
Used to happen quite often when bodyshot fel-ix dealt 79.

Randomly got a kill with it once. Was so surprised I forgot to screenshot it though…
