Should DB mercs be separated by factions?

(TheStrangerous) #1

It’s a lore question, but also a potential conquest idea mode.

DB comics and trailers presents mercs fighting each other, right? BUT WHO THE HELL FIGHTS WITH WHO, AND WHO’S ALLIED WITH WHO?!

There hasn’t been really any established rivalry in DB…
What if DB had factions, like in OG Battlefront 2, with 5 mercs from each group?
Example: SkyHammer, Aura, Bushwhacker, Vassilli, Fragger. As “The Average Joe Faction”.

Any more ideas?

From what I’ve been able to tell, all the mercs are part of MercServ. I’m not exactly sure what the merc’s relationship is with MercServ, if they give them housing/training/food/etc, but from the arsenal crates, we know they have something to with equipment, and likely distributing contracts.

It’s kinda sketchy, but in game it seems to me that MercServ is just a neutral company that sells its services out to both the CDA and Jackal. But considering that doesn’t really make sense, since the CDA seems like a governmental organization and probably wouldn’t rely on mercenaries, in canon all the mercs would probably be used exclusively by Jackal, against generic scrubby soldiers.

We also know Aimee is employed by MercServ before she becomes a merc in the events of DB, so clearly MercServ does more than just working with Jackal and is probably a legitimate company with shady terrorist connections, rather than an exclusively underground company.

However, the scrubs trailer throws a wrench into all that assuming it’s canon, since we see mercs fighting on both sides. But that begs a bigger question, why is the CDA using mercenary work when they should be part of the government and should be able to just send in the military?
My theory, the CDA is actually a private business focused on cleaning up London after being contracted by the government and multiple private businesses around London. But that still doesn’t explain why they’re the only ones fighting jackal, or for that matter, fighting them at all instead of contacting the police.

I’m really tired so maybe that didn’t make any sense, and I’m gonna hold out on more theories until tomorrow, but hopefully I’ll be able to figure it out mlol

They could sort them by hair colour as long as it does not limit my ability to use each of them on either side.

No separation. Just corruption, money and power struggle. There could be more factions than Jackal and CDA. Perhaps SAS, organized crime and foreign intelligence in addition. You can pick your side, but that doesnt really affect anything more than if enemy team looks red or yellow and what happens in cinematics. You can swap your allegiance to different faction when game progress, it could unlock new missions. More factions could mean missions that have three teams or more clashing.

We need high variation of skins, so you never see same proxy on field.

I think that CDA and Jackal factions will be nice.
So we will have mercs fighting for CDA (like Vassili and Turtle), mercs fighting for Jackal (like Phantom and Fletcher), and mercs that are neutral (like Aimee and Redeye probably). I don’t think we need anything new.

Titanfall 2 lets you chose a faction to go into battle for, though I am not sure this actually has any effect beyond the introduction dropship sequence, voiceovers and unlockable cosmetics.

You could easily adapt this for Dirty Bomb - every player is free to join a faction of their choice which in turn affects the match voiceovers and helps raising a bar of some kind somewhere (faction rank/unlocks maybe?). Now the great thing about this is that everybody hears their own faction’s lines only, so it doesn’t matter if you team up with people playing for other factions since you won’t be able to find out anyway.

Officially all Mercs have their own backgrounds and stories. From Javelin’s release you know she’s testing for Ghostclip, and if you look closely on the Croztni you’ll see ‘Fletcher Arms Co.’ stamped on.

The Mercs all work for MercServ. They’re the ones who organise the contracts for the Mercs from Jackal and the CDA.

If we officially split Mercs across CDA and Jackal then matches wouldn’t make sense. CDA is always defending from Jackal attackers. But if they’re fighting for the highest bidder, it always makes sense

Makes you wonder how the mercs feel about teaming up with the folks they just fought against one match contract ago.

  • “Hey, weren’t you the woman you blew me to pieces with her rocket launcher three times yesterday?”
  • “Yes. Problem?”
  • “Uhm… no. Not at all.”

:stuck_out_tongue:

thats why they are called mercenaries…

no hard feelings, just business.

It would be cool if there was 2 player models for each mercenary for both sides. For example, Stoker on CDA would have the gas mask, and a CDA logo on his suit, and the Jackal one would have a different mask, or no mask, with jackal on it, just some cool details and differences for each side rather than having the red and blue overlay on player models all the time.

Like shoe. said, in canon every merc is just a freelancer working on commission. You got the people working for private businesses, like Guardian and Javelin, you got Phantom who probably just does whatever the hell he wants, and you got the basic MercServ peeps, who just work for the highest dollar.
I’d like to believe there are mercs who work exclusively for Jackal, and others that work exclusively for the CDA, but that seems like it would have to be non-canon events just for the hell of it.
Since I’m here, I figure I’ll just leave my list of mercs who work for which side (just for lolz, really)

! CDA:
! * Aura
! * Fragger
! * Vassili
! * Bushwhacker
! * Turtle
! * Nader
! * Phoenix
! * Arty
! * Skyhammer
!
! Jackal:
! * Sparks
! * Sawbonez
! * Thunder
! * Rhino
! * Fletcher
! * Kira
! * Proxy
! * Phantom
! * Stoker
! * Redeye
!
! Private Organization/Other:
! * Guardian
! * Javelin
! * Aimee
! * Hunter (maybe?)

LAWBREAKERS DID THIS!
Heck, just why the hell not? We could have 2X more characters with more nationalities and genders!

B-but imagine Phantom no longer being the lonely Poop-tier virgin merc, since they could add another poop-tier merc on the other faction side, like…

Soldiers fight and die for honour and freedom.
Mercenaries are just state sponsored gangsters

The problem with that is it starts to become very difficult to recognise what Mercs you’re playing with and against. It’s very important that all Mercs have a unique and recognisable silhouette.

Too bad you guys cant do like lawbreakers does 2 diferent mercs same abilities
For example the assasin role has kitsune on the breakers side which we call jackels in db and they have helion on the law side which we would. Call cda. 2 different mercs for each side but exactly the same stats/weapons/abilities
