Shotguns unreliable?

(blisteringOwlNest) #1

I will never forget the day I faced an aura with the exact same load out as me. I shot her in the head and she shot me in the body, and I died.

i think this is because of the way shotguns spread. Shooting in the body actually does more damage as more pellets hit, while the smaller target of the head allows less damage (potentially) and the top point of the star actually does hit the head.

I saw a suggestion a while ago to increase the damage of the middle pellets so that more accuracy is rewarded.

Thoughts?

yeah it would be useful, but do we really need more weapons that are capable of doing insane headshot accuracy?

I don’t know. Maybe it is better to leave the shotguns as the weapons where people shouldn’t go for headshots or they should only go for them when you are barrel stuffing people.

Do I personally care either way? not really. just my thoughts on the topic.

what? you can one shoot shyhammer in head with remburgh, you should go for headshots, watch hexa-flexa proxy gameplay and say that again

um… sure? I know this, why are you telling me? Do you know how difficult it is and how close you have to be to consistently get one shot headshot shotgun kills? Its not exactly a reliable strategy.

I heard aiming for the neck is most effective.

Shotguns are just inconsistent. I haven’t used them as much after the last few patches, but a couple months ago, when I was using them a lot, I noticed that the damage is just random sometimes. I’ve shot mercs at pointblank range, no jumping, and center of their body, and only did 1-10% damage. (on mercs like Skyhammer, Bushwacker, etc).

Then other people used to shoot me once when I had almost full health and I died. I had some experiences where shotguns actually worked, but a lot where they didn’t. Nonetheless, they’re fun to use. Especially to make people rage.

Shotgun is the evil incarnated. They are a mistake and should not exist

@Sploosh I have exactly the same experience, apart from finding them enjoyable. I hate the way pulling the trigger is like entering the lottery, caus I have terrible luck.

Right!? I feel like I get more kills not aiming dead center of my target. I swear shooting them in the arms or legs works better. But even then, it feels random. But on the rare occasion all of the pellets appear to hit, I feel like a god. Haha.

Summoning @Eox as he had a magnificent picture presentation hidden somewhere in this forum how shotgun spread functions.

All in all it was more of a weird star instead of symmetrical hexagon / whatever-gon as it should be for more consistency. None of the pellets seem to hit the exact middle, which is weird. If I recall right of the star- shape, that’d explain why neck would be most efficent place to aim: highest pellet hits head, rest go mostly to body. Opposing to aiming at head which results in highest and side pellets go to waste more often (depending on range obviously).

On side not, sheesh the search function is absolute bollocks.

WHO DARES TO STOP MY SLUMBER !?.. Oh hi @bonsta

I sadly don’t have that pic anymore. However I can confirm that shotguns have a star shaped pattern. That pattern is made from 11 pellets (12 for Remburg), making headshots pretty unreliable past point blank. It’s indeed wiser to aim for the neck and hope that the upper pellets will hit the head.

aye, and in that context shotgun shots are pretty consistent. Imo whoever thinks they aren’t is spamming jump so much they do not notice how abysmal the accuracy gets mid-air.

Reminds me of Insurgency, where with certain type of ammo/gun you inflict higher damage by shooting extremities.
