Shiny's Fan-Mercs and Mercenary Fusions (With art and stuff!)

(Shinywindow) #1

I loved going through everyone’s Merc ideas so much that I thought I’d show my own (and maybe in the future draw up some Fan-Mercs I really liked on the board)

Dread is a merc I previously posted and eventually expanded on. The basic idea of her character was that she could provide a more defensive approach to gameplay. Rather than immediately take away health like Stoker’s molotovs, her gas cans would slow characters, make them cough (so you can hear where they are), and eventually take health if they linger for too long.

Haunt is a robotic character being remotely controlled by a living person (probably someone who isn’t able to join in the fight due to disability). Haunt adds a passive approach to combat with a hologram; Haunt’s body will lay dormant while a fast moving projection (controlled by the player) roams the battlefield. The presence of the “ghost” can slow down machines like turrets, EVs, disrupt enemy maps, emit static noise, and when close enough to players will prevent them from healing (and maybe chip away health). It’s not invincible by any means, and accurate shots can destroy it. When this happens Haunt’s body will be stunned and show itself on enemy maps. As an extra creepy factor, Haunt’s dormant body can shake and stare at enemy players.

Wheeler is a fast assault merc that can take in a considerable amount of hits. As a roller derby inspired character with exoskeleton skates, rather than her specialty being in killing opponents, she can push them back from helpless teammates and stun them if her momentum is high enough. As a result, she can easily break up melee and close combat characters (watching Wheeler charge at an enemy team running away from her would be hilarious)

Burlesque plays a supportive/defensive role by being a living bullet sponge thanks to his magnet. When filled up, the magnet detonates into metal fragments, ricocheting off surfaces and hitting the enemy team. Subsequently, Burlesque can remove his magnet and throw it away like a bomb to prevent blowing himself up (removing it leaves him vulnerable but increases his overall speed for quick getaways). When not exploding, the magnet can be placed into the environment to protect his team from oncoming fire. Burlesque was a fun character to come up with! I wanted to make a male character that could stand out from the rest (games need more gingers and dudes with colorful hair!) and look just as stylish as the female mercs.

Pretty cool stuff right there

+1 for creativity.
+1 for art.

However could you think about their stats bit further?
Like health, speed and class?

(Myreslia) #4

I love them but yeah … loadouts and stats would be great too

(Mr-Penguin) #5

Noice.

(_retired_) #6

Hey, nice art!

(Samniss_Arandeen) #7

This be some good stuff.

(Shinywindow) #8

Sorry for the late replies! I thought i’d be updating this more frequently, guess not haha!
As for the character stats and loadouts:

Dread (Fire Support): Health 130, Speed 390.
Loadout favors shotguns and pistols as secondaries.

Haunt (Recon): Health 100, Speed 420.
Loadout favors SMGS and machine pistols as secondaries.

Wheeler (Assault): Health, 150, Speed 450 (500 when charging)
Loadout favors assault rifles and pistols as secondaries.

Burlesque (Objective): Health 120 (80 with armor removed), Speed 400 (450 with armor removed)
Loadout favors SMGS and pistols as secondaries.

Also if you have any suggestions don’t hesitate to ask! I’d love to draw up mercs that aren’t my own, and It’d be nice to know what kind of mercs everyone would like to see.

With your amazing art, I’m going to indulge in a bit of narcissism and give you all four of my pending suggestions. Though, don’t be compelled to draw any of them unless you find that Merc a particularly good idea. I’d be honored if even one grabs your attention.

 • Vertigo is a multiple Space Shuttle astronaut turned Fire Support Merc, with a jetpack and Pulse Grenades to control the battlefield.
 • Snakeskin is an Objective Specialist, with holograms to deceive and fool the enemy.
 • Mimic can scavenge and take on the Abilities of any dead Merc she encounters, and with her bow and arrow, can deal insanely lethal sniper hits. As far as physical appearance goes, maybe Jennifer Lawrence can give you a few hints.
 • Gunslinger is an Assault-type Merc with a cyborg parkour cowboy theme, pistols akimbo, and is the epitome of a “glass cannon”.

Here’s a new merc!

Stats:
80 Health, 480 Speed.

Leech/Sting/Clot: This merc is equipped with a series of injector knives that leech health off of enemies when attached. These knives leech health, turning the victim into a living healing station that persists even when in a downed state (until death or removal). Multiple knives can be attached onto the same target, draining even more health. However, the knives are easily removable via melee and gunfire, so players without nearby allies around will most likely perish by the time they get the things off.

Gameplay-wise, Leech/Sting/Clot was inspired by cheeky melee medic players (like me!) who take advantage of Sparks’ and Aura’s speed for hasty hits. Melee-focused medics are becoming more viable, with some players reaching 5 to 10 melee kills now.

As for inspiration, this merc was inspired by Filipino nurses and medical professionals. Seeing as how diverse the roster of medics already are (two African Americans, one Latino, and a European), I thought it’d be appropriate to continue the trend and have a Filipino medic. Plus, bladed weapons are a huge staple in Filipino combat history (butterfly knives originated from the Philippines!)

(sorry that the art isn’t up to standard as usual. Kinda rushed this)

Your art is very nice! Do you post on any websites? Like deviantart or a social media platform?

(Shinywindow) #12

Thank you for the compliment! I don’t have much except for this blog and I rarely post. Have a great day!

(Samniss_Arandeen) #13

Did you catch my previous post? I fear that because you posted mere seconds after I, that you never got it.

(ASTOUNDINGSHELL) #14

@Shinywindow
those are pretty good Merc fan-arts.
do you do commisions?

(Random Joe) #15

Dread seems more interesting now that i read all of the descriptions.

(Shinywindow) #16

Okay wow, sorry for the late reply y’all! Classes have been keeping me busy! Also I don’t do commissions at the moment.

Here’s some fan mercs from other posters (which i forgot to name and source)

And here’s a new one I’d love to elaborate on!

Recon Mercenary: Grin

Grin is a Recon class; it’s her job to scout for enemies and eliminate key opponents to dent the enemy team. Unlike other Recon mercs who target strong threats like a fully loaded Rhino, Grin specializes in hunting weakened targets before they can recover. Thanks to her passive ability it’s difficult for opponents to escape.

Abilities

Grin is equipped with a neural accelerator on her chest that produces chemicals like adrenaline and endorphins when she’s hurt. However, the more hurt she is the stronger the dose, causing her to laugh and give away her position if she’s sneaking by.

Passive ability: The lower her health, the better her movement speed, melee speed, gun accuracy, and reload time.

Active ability: Grin will use her chemically enhanced senses to detect enemies; the lower the enemy’s health the wider and stronger the detection. This effect also leaves a trail for Grin or her allies to follow, making it easier to chase down opponents.

Countering Grin

Grin’s disadvantage is her advantage: she relies on low health, making her very easy to kill. Additionally her laughter lets you know when she’s around, allowing you to prepare for when she attacks.

On another note, because of her low health, most jump landings may kill her. When pursued try to find a high point and jump off, forcing Grin to stop the chase or risk splattering herself on the floor by accident.

Backstory:

Grin retired from her long career in the Mexican Armed Forces to travel the world. Hearing about the traumatic Dirty Bomb attacks, she volunteered in the experimental Muertos Chemical Accelerators to ease combat suffering for future soldiers. Now she’s in London, sending her grandchildren CDA approved postcards (with love) and helping the other mercs wash those ugly blood stains out on laundry day (also with love).

Stats:
Health: 130
Speed: 370 (450 at half health, 520 at one health)

Equipment:
Melee: Prioritizes the Beckhill and Stiletto over the Cricket Bat.
Secondary:

 • Simeon .357
 • Selbstadt .40
 • Smjüth & Whetsman

Primary:

 • KEK-10
 • SMG-9
 • Remburg 7

Notes

 • Design based off Mexican Day of the Dead Catrina dolls and Raiden from the Metal Gear series.
 • Grin is Mexican.
 • On a design point, it didn’t feel right that there weren’t any older female mercs (Sparks’ age seems to fluctuate between her 30’s to 50’s). For Grin, she might look like a complete monster, but she’s a loving grandmother who’ll probably scrounge through London for supplies to bake radioactive free chocolate chip cookies for the younger mercs.

(gg2ez) #17

My lord. Grin sounds terrifying.

(Random Joe) #18

Grin sounds like my kinda character.

(Mr-Penguin) #19

Grin looks amazing. How long did you spend on drawing her?

(Shinywindow) #20

@derpypenguinz19 She took roughly 1 and a half hours to do!
