shadows out of nowhere

(fraco) #1

Hi guys,

me - again.

look at this screenie. Shadows are just a tiny little bit weird aren’t they?

light should be coming from the skybox (for now it really is a box) or from a weak light enity placed exactly between those two shadows. The weird shadows come from that light for sure(removing the light -> dark but no weird shadows)

this is how it looks in radiant:

And actually, there are more weird shadows nearby (prolly from same light ?):

(brigthened that image in photoshop a bit)

Also on the terrain there’s some weirdness:

so, what should i know that i don’t?

thnx

Are the wedge-shaped brushes there made with vertex editing? Your map may have (several) mangled brushes that are throwing shadows.

Run BobToolz brush cleanup and recompile, see if the shadows go away.

If that doesn’t fix the problem, try deleting a few brushes at a time that were built using vertex editing until the shadows go away. Once you’ve gotten rid of the shadows, reconstruct the offending brushes using the clipper tool.

made those with the clipper, but then again I have been messing around with the vertices in that entire room. Foyleman’s video tutorial for sof2 at www.modsonline.com suggested dragging vertices around for mitering those edges together. So I probably messed up a brush there. Bobtoolz reported 2 messed up brushes, but the screenies have been made after that (so problem not fixed).

Just a thought. These bad brushes, is this something one could make a program for to find and maybe even fix them? I might just fire up my editor and my C-compiler if it wouldn’t be to hard. Or maybe it would be a nice compiler feature :D.

I’m gonna try your suggestions tonight and start deleting brushes.

thnx Ydnar
