Shadowrun, APB, Brink...

While I can’t say for Brink yet, the other two games are some of the best i’ve ever played. I can honestly say that Shadowrun is the best FPS ever. No game has done what it has since then. Look around the internet at what people have to say about it. Gamespot gave this game a 6.5! This disgusts me in many many ways. I am not sure what is wrong with the state of affairs where people aren’t willing to learn, try new things, and most importantly have fun. People forget in this age of hyper-realism that we are ultimately playing games here. While other titles strive for realism they are all doomed to failure because it is an impossibility. Brink, on the other hand, sets out to provide a FUN experience. I suppose I am just annoyed at the attitudes of some gamers…

Lets see here… “doesn’t live up to expectations” is another thing I cringe when I hear. People create these humongous fortresses of their own design, in their own minds. Whatever bearing these constructions have on the reality of a certain game is irrelevant because the two are so separate from each other. Disappointment is inevitable when we set the standards beyond what is possible within this GAME realm.

If you don’t think I have any cred I used to play a TON of W:ET and a little bit of ET:QW. Been playing games for a while now. The day APB closed down was a day that I cried just a little bit.

To APB I heard “repetitive gameplay,” what a dumb complaint! Sure there were maybe… 7 different objectives types, capture the flag, hold this territory, kill x… we aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel here we are trying to have some fun. The ways in which to approach these objectives was infinite, and the havoc in the city was like nothing I had seen before.

So many sequels these days. No one has the balls to start a new IP, and why should they? WHY? The internet hordes will descend upon any creation and tear it to shreds. Death to creativity, death to innovation, death to FUN, to novelty and to care. I do not want my developers investing any LOVE to their creations but instead hope only to play derivative and expected copies of the same game that was released in 1999.

If anyone has the patience to read through this rant I salute you.

Some games that have had their souls ripped out, the same force that ruined these franchises has contributed to whatever this mentality is that I tried to illustrate above:

Fallout, Splinter Cell, The Elder Scrolls, Civilization, Operation Flashpoint, Ghost Recon, Call of Duty, BATTLEFIELD (can’t believe i almost forgot that, BC:2, while entertaining, is a travesty when compared to 2142 or even 1942) Resident Evil…

The list goes on, I need to write these down and assemble my definitive selection so I can hand write personal letters to the current executives of these companies to express my rage. What happened? Planetside for example, came out a decade ago and nothing since has even attempted what it has. We have settled, for what Nietzsche called the “last man.” Give us this last man, the crowd shouts. Keep your over man.

“his ‘Over Man’ may be contrasted to a weak-willed individual, one who is tired of life, takes no risks, seeks only comfort and security: the last man.”

I do not expect things to get better, only worse. I am sure that nostalgia paints a rosy picture of what would now be considered obsolete titles, but every single one that I have mentioned has something that is terribly missing not only from the gaming circuit but from modern life in general: SOUL.

I know what I will be doing tomorrow… after studying of course!!!

Have to agree with the Shadowrun comments, epic game that never caught on. Never play APB though.

My worry is not reviewers not “getting” the game but the severe technical issues online. Like I’ve posted before, I’m hoping my mates 4.5 meg upload with sort that out.

Dude, the reason it’s scoring so low is because of the lack of Online Game modes. Hitting so close to home with Team Fortress and being a new title, it was expected to have more of what people want, not just what the devs convict to.

I would have to agree with the ratings though. They could have still had this awesome team work style game play that everyone’s so jolly about, and just as easily incorporated other modes of online co-op and multiplayer gameplay which would be expected of a game resembling something like Team fortress 2…

Just saying… TF2

This is the absolute truth, and I think it’s going to hit this forum hard. Well said.

If it was down to IGN reviews i wouldn’t of picked up Shadowrun, or Socom Confrontation on the ps3.

Shadowrun 6.9/10
Socom Confrontation 4.5/10

I loved both games and played both to death, i hope i enjoy Brink just as much.

Good posts, I agree. APB was freaking brilliant, I am so looking forward to it re-opening this year as it is a just plain fun game.

Speaking of actual good games that I believe have had some soul breathed back into them. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The reviews were REALLY nitpicky, claiming it stole gameplay from God of War and Devil May Cry and similar titles, but can it not be said that if that the original Castlevania franchise was not the same type of game in the 80s and 90s? I mean really people, if it’s about who’s copying who then who really did copy who in this case?

Give credit where it’s due, don’t write things off so quickly, and always be skeptical of reviews that are not your own as there’s a lot of REALLY good **** out there that gets horrible metacritic scores.

Steam has tons of great indie games and I love it, the potato sack was freaking brilliant and I only got time to touch Cogs, Tiki Tori, Super Meat Boy and Amnesia… let alone the other half a dozen games that came with it.
