Shadow problems with a rippling awning

I have a couple of awnings made from the egypt_props/canvas textures/shader, however, the shadows where the cloth folds is very dark

I’m using the default shader for the texture.

What is the best way to fix this so that 1) the shadows are lighter or b) non existant?

Make sure you are applying this shader to only one face of the brush. Use weaponclip on the others.

I say this because it looks like you have applied the shader to both the top and bottom faces, so that the deformvertex commands are causing them to phase into each other.
