Set up LAN, with omnibot: Need step-by-step guide (for total noob)

(Loffy) #1

Hi!

This is what I have:

[ul]
[li]4 Windows laptops (each is 3-4 years old).[/li][li]Time and some money.[/li][li]Motivation.[/li][li]Mapping and map-scripting skillz (both ET map scripts and Omnibot map-scripts).[/li][li]I have made a lot of custom maps for W:ET, including maps that are ready for Omnibot servers.[/li][/ul]

Lacking/problems

[ul]
[li]Knowledge about scripts for servers.[/li][li]Have never set up an online server or a LAN.[/li][/ul]

What I want

[ol]
[li]I want W:ET to run on each laptop, with a custom map that I have made myself.[/li][li]I want to be able to invite 4 friends, position them at each laptop, and we can all play together, in a local network. It will be us against the evil Omnibots.[/li][li]Thus, it should all be on my custom map, with Omnibots.[/li][/ol]

You know, like a fun, pre-party thing. I knowe they would probably prefer Mario Kart, but I want to test this first

I can manage step 1 myself, but the rest… How? Are there step-by-step guides available out there? Could you nice people point me in the right direction, please.

Many thanks in advance!

PS. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is forever.

On lan, if all are connected to same its just to host game at one machine, then find it with the others on online menu on “local” instead of “internet”,

might be a solution for the LAN

I thought you had the physical LAN part down.

There are a few solutions for this depending on what kind of hardware you got from your ISP.
Modern ISP’s bundle router, wifi router & modem all into one device. If that’s that case you you then the easiest thing you can do it just connect to your wifi with all 4 laptops. That’s the setup for LAN done (they’re all on the same network)

If you don’t have wifi then either:

  1. There is a router in the same device you got from your ISP
  2. There isn’t a router so you just have a modem and you need a router.

If you’re in case 1 then again not that difficult. Hopefully you have 4 free ports so then just connect the 4 laptops with ethernet to the router and you’re done. If you don’t have enough free ports buy a switch (with 5 or more ports), connect the switch to the router and then the 4 laptops to the other free ports on the switch.

Difference between a switch and a router: Router handles the distribution of IP addresses, a switch doesn’t - it forwards the request for an IP to the router.

If you’re in case 2 then you need to buy a router and put it between your modem and all of your computers.

For the server part, make a fresh installation of W:ET if you haven’t already. Right click the ETED.exe and create a shortcut. This can be done on any of the 4 laptops btw (but try to pick the strongest).
When you go to the properties of the created shortcut you can add start up parameters at the end of the target line. Here’s an example I found online (for a trickjump server):
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory\ETDED.exe” +set sv_dedicated 2 +set fs_game etjump +exec server.cfg +map mrmen_gamma_final"

I would advise to leave sv_dedicated on 2. This means when you start the server you’ll just see a console. So you don’t need to be connected to the server all the time to keep it running.

So now when you click your shortcut a server will start running.
For installing the mod you want most of the time they come with a manual telling you what to do. If you’re stuck or need more help let us know what mod you’re trying to install.
Same for Omni-bot I think it’s got a manual that tells you how to install it on a server.

Just found this guide that looks pretty good: http://wolffiles.de/filebase/ET/Stuff/ET-Serverguide.pdf
I found it when looking for an example server.cfg - the server.cfg is just a collection of server commands that define what settings your server will have. There are a handful of settings that are the same for all servers, but most of the interesting settings are mod dependent.

So at this point your laptops are physically connected to eachother, you’ve installed the mod you want and omni-bot on the laptop that’s going to be the server. You’ve set up the start up parameters & changed the settings in server.cfg (server.cfg goes in etmain with your custom map). Now all you need to do is connect to the server.
On the host computer open a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd / start-> search for cmd - depending on windows version). Type in ipconfig and write down the ipv4 address. On that same computer start the server then start a client (click on the shortcut then click on ET.exe), open the console on the client and type “/connect 127.0.0.1”. Then on the other 3 computers start ET, open console and type “/connect <insert IPv4 address>”

Hopefully it should work. Good luck
