Server Not Responding

(beardawnwood) #1

When I or a friend tries to invite into a co-op game we get the steam error message “Server not responding.” We’ve tried doing this with our firewalls disabled with no change in outcome. All correct ports are forwarded.

Same here, I couldn’t get a P2P game going. Both me and my friend tried to host, with DMZ on our routers on and pointing to the correct IP, and windows firewalls off. Both with Windows 7/64-bit.

Please fix this.

yep getting this problem too, also there wasn’t any indication weather or not this was TCP or UDP, has anyone tried either or with any luck?

Not 100% sure here, but it should really be UDP for FPS games - due to the high number of packets being exchanged. MMOs tend to use TCP, due to fewer packets and the benefits of transmission acknowledgement.

If you are using a router try by passing it I think some ports need to be opened up…

When you say you forwarded the ports, that means you forwarded 27015, 27016 AND 8766?

For me, I did TCP and UDP both for each one. Worked fine after.

I’m assuming this is a Listen server issue?

A friend and I spent at least an hour trying to get co-op to work on our PCs, but to no avail. However, I may have a temporary fix, but I haven’t tried it yet myself.

It may be possible to get it to work if you use Hamachi.

I’ve opened/forwarded 27015, 27016 and 8766 in UDP and TCP and was unable to connect to a friend (who had also done that) or have him connect to me.

I also started a dedicated server but neither of us was able to connect to it through the router (I was however, able to connect to it via my internal/local IP).

That’s the problem, then.

From wikipedia:
“Listen server refers to a situation in which the server typically runs in the same process as the game client, allowing a player to both host and participate in the game. As a side effect, the server is usually terminated when the client is.”

We couldn’t join co-op games because each time, we chose dedicated rather than listen for the server type. We didn’t have the hardware or software for the dedicated server to work, meaning no one could join.

In the next patch, you should add a description of listen servers to avoid confusion.

This is happening for a lot of people. Surely Splash Damage folks knew about it before release, because surely they beta tested this basic functionality.

Given all of that, do we get compensated in some way for shelling out good money for a product that did not have the advertised features?
