Server lag when players join

#1

Hi I’m having issues with my Brink server, people get major lag when players connect to the server. I have contacted my server provider and they have said its a known problem across the board and it will need to be fixed by a patch by the developer.

I dont seem to have issues on other servers, so I just want some clarification that other servers are having the same issue or is it just mine.

Thanks.

I’m beginning to wonder about all this lag stuff. I have a multiplay server and I’ve played most of my 23 hours this weekend on it, with absolutely NO lag whatsoever. Furthermore, it’s been full every day between about 8am to 4am, so presumably people are beginning to add it as a favourite. I don’t pimp it, I only really got it to fiddle with, so I can only imagine people like it because it’s lag-free.

I pay a lot more per month for it than I could have done elsewhere and I can’t help wondering if many rental servers are just not running on adequate kit.

Sorry Jammy, just seen your post on the multiplay forums. Forget I said anything mate!

Just to add my tuppence worth. Our gaming community recently bought a Multiplay server for Brink, and are having nothing but trouble with it. Same story with the lag when people join - not to mention everyone getting kicked at the end of each round.

Both of which Multiplay deny as being their fault and state that we will have to wait for a patch from Splash Damage.

There again, with that said - I’ve only experienced the issue with the server dropping everyone at the end of every round on Multiplay servers, and I’ve played 20+hrs on a lot of different servers.

Here’s the forum post about it: http://forums.multiplay.co.uk/feedback-bug-reports-etc/82274-brink-server-disconnects-each-new-map#post1028471

OT: Jammy didn’t know you had a server, what’s it called? I’ll drop by sometime!

Jammydodger,

Not sure if this will help but I believe my server is on the same box as yours (85.236.101.3) and I’m also experiencing massive lag/connection issues.

I don’t get them elsewhere other than the occasional minor hiccup. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s a problem closer to Multiplay for that reason alone.

Would be nice if SD could chime in to say if there’s potential for it to be a server code issue.

I tried turning mine back on yesterday but the issues were the same so left it until today, when I switched it off again. Feels like a waste of money, at this point.

Jammy and Goo, why not contact MP and ask if your servers can be moved to 85.236.101.11 and see if it helps? My box is there and still has no lag issues whatsoever.

Thanks goat, I’ll ask them later.

Jammy,

Try this on your Multiplay server.

applyServerConfig “Advanced”

Then in the variables Multiplay say you can change, copy in:

// Servers settings - Changeable
seta si_playMode “2” // 0 = Solo, 1 = Co-op, 2 = Versus
seta si_maxRank “4” // 0 = Rank 1 players only, 1 = Rank 2 and below, 2 = Rank 3 and below, 3 = rank 4 and below, 4 = All ranks
seta si_rankRestricted “0”
seta net_serverAllowHijacking “0” // 0 = Disabled, 1 = Enabled
seta bot_minClients “0”
seta si_minPlayers “4”
seta si_teamForceBalance “1”
seta si_readyPercent “51”
seta si_warmupSpawn “1”

And tell me how it goes. I returned mine to a stock config then added in just a few variables and so far, it’s not lagged. Only played two games mind you but join/leavers didn’t disrupt it.

Worth a try, at least.

Thanks for the info goo, I’ll give it a whirl tonight and see how it goes.

Multiplay server here too, massive lagspikes when people join or leave, and changing map sometimes takes so long it kicks everyone off the server. Halp!

I’m running the ‘advanced’ config without much else going on.

#13

Still got problems, I’m giving them 24 hours to sort it or I want a full refund.

(light_sh4v0r) #14

Let me know if that works out, should be interesting

(goat72) #15

I’ve taken the liberty of opening a support ticket, explaining that whilst some of their customers are having severe lag, I am having no problems oither than the usual random crashing. I’m hoping that they will figure out what is different between the physical server that you guys are on, and the one on which my server is installed. I’ll let you know if I get an answer but I didn’t really ask a question so I’m guessing I won’t.

Anyway, hope it helps in some way…

Reply from Multiplay, guys:

"Thanks for that Simon we have used this info to identify a fix for at least some of the lag which was being caused by server side logging.

This is now rolling out across the board so hopefully will help everyone."

sorry to say, but multiplay is bad provider. try rackage. london based.

Cheers Goat, thanks for getting involved
We have done the same thing as Jammydodger, if they can’t fix things soon we will demand a refund and move to another provider.

Update from multiplay:

Quick update on the lag we have identified server logging as being one cause of player join / leave lag, we have turned this off on all servers now to help eliminate this component at least.
Hope this helps

Iv just been onto our server and the issue of lag when players join has indeed been fixed \0/

Thanks for your help guys.

Yep, solved here too. Good stuff and thanks to all involved
