Just had an interesting / fun idea for the server browser: Some kind of algorithm that gets all the servers and maps them into a web that look like the streets of London. The servers are always mapped to the same spot so if you have a fav server you can also remember it by it’s spot on the map.
Server browser idea
Like the idea, gives some graphical character to the server browser. Perhaps official/VIP (people pay more for a prominent location) servers could be London landmarks including train/tube stations. With other servers taking the London streets. Alter the maps a little to fit in with the DB story and you’re onto an awesome little touch. This would even fit in with presenting stats about the game. Number of servers could be listed as accessible areas. People as unauthorised population/incursions. Clans could also by land on the map for a fee, put their flag on it, link to their profile etc when you mouse over.
Damn, that has some great prospects.
Also, embed RAD Soldiers into the launcher so we can play while queuing for a server or between matches.
I had some after thoughts on this, it shouldn’t be a replacement for the serverlist since:
- Hard to sort by ping, name, etc…
- sometimes you just want to browse the list to find things quickly
But I still think it could be a cool way to visualize the data.
I like it. And then a blurred-darkened version in the background of the transparent server browser that flies to each location as you go through the static list. Only for high-end pc’s obviously.
It’s a nice touch, some polish on a product and something that makes the it distinguished. I hope beyond the budget for features, maps and content there is ample time and money to put in these kind of non gameplay type things.
