Server Authentication

(taw_m0nsta) #161

Still here http://www.activision.com/atvihub/search/games.do?keyword=quake&submit=SEARCH&site=en_US

(SockDog) #162

They also have Quake 4 and that is most certainly now 100% Bethesda published.

(millerq3) #163

Stand corrected m0nsta…though it’s not prime…& has Dthwsh states not much money init…

(Setlec) #164

i was gonna post that… lol

this is a bit confusing i thought that Bethesda Soft got the publishing rights since it re-released the game for Mac OS X, it shouldn’t be showing on lack-Of-vision website…
So …if they don’t care about this game, why don’t show some respect to us players and fix a non-authentication patch ???
It can’t be that much money…
Yeah makes sense to fix a game they no longer own the rights to, a game that was developed by a studio that jumped ship to another publisher after this game was finished, during a period when id (the IP holders) were in the process of getting bought by rivals Zenimax. It’s same reason Wolfenstein 09 received little to no post release support and had it’s development poorly managed resulting in the crap fest that it was, business.

(TAW_OldWolf) #166

Even though Activision doesn’t own the right of the game name they still are responsible for running servers, according to Badman…

Is there a sale on punctuation marks?

As far as I can gather there is no contractual responsibility for running those servers, they can pretty much do as they please, they removed the stats site and old forums which they were ‘responsible’ for.

I need a magnifying glass to read it but this is what it says on the box of the game:

“© 2007 Id Software, Inc. All rights reserved. Published and distributed by Activision Publishing, Inc. under licence. Developed by Splash Damage Ltd. Activision makes no guarantees regarding the availability of online play and may withdraw online service in it’s discretion without notice.”

I’m not very good at Legalees, but that roughly translates as ‘thank you for your 50 euros but we’re gonna do whatever pleases us, whenever we want to, if we think it’s in our own interest’.

Credit where credit is due, someone else pointed that out earlier already, but I figured it might be worth repeating here.

And btw, shouldn’t it be “at it’s discretion” instead of “in it’s discretion”?

They are forcing us to buy their new games?

“Lets turn it off so they buy us more 500 units of our new game. So we can lunch tomorow at Heart Attack and buy 5 Mozzila Black Burger”?

(Setlec) #170

the point of killing etqw was for making room for their modern warfare or call of duty, well P.O.S. games…

(DrFunkenstein) #171

I’m sure they’re trying to kill a game with an active player base of about 500 to boost the sales of the games you mentioned.

Don’t assume intent when you can also explain it with neglect and/or lack of interest.

(Dthy) #172

To put it simply, the game was “killed off” because it probably didn’t meet projected sales figures. It’s nothing new in buisness, if it doesn’t meet expectations, simply get rid of it and try again. As has already been stated, Activision have no contactual obligations to keep this games servers running, whilst morally they should.

(Donnovan) #173

I believe ETQW build a somekind valuable atmosphere around it. People talk about everything, but when to talk about ETQW they just think for some seconds, or dont talk anything at all. This value is more “Activision Hurt” than the player base itself. Its like a stone in the shoe, or a ghost they meet everytime the ETQW words sings…

So if they can turn off everything and make all those consciential hurts invisible, for the grace of their mark, they will do that. No one know, no one saw it, so it never existed.

(Loki.) #174

reading this thread, one can only assume the end of ETQW was near…

sad days ahead…

hopefully SD future title(S) will come close to this gem…

(Donnovan) #175

I was kiding!!!

They will fix ETQW Auth server like in W:ET. We just need to wait.

(Dthy) #176

The amount of times I’ve heard this over the course of getting the game for the first time until now it too damn high!

(Donnovan) #177

I heard butt play is nice!

And with the “random human voice mod” it gets better!

Edit: “bot”.

(BaggerMan) #178

Badman,

It seems as though that even if Id is reaching out to Activision, they are turning a blind-eye to the situation.
What would it take for SD or Id to possibly make a patch to either get rid of server authentication for unranked servers, or re-direct to a sever like the one for ET:Wolfenstien? It basically uses the same setup, and once authenticated, the server could be directed to the MasterServer for whitelisting. It could probably even be hosted on that same ET:W authentication server.

(BaggerMan) #179

Has anyone had any luck re-using the serverlicensecode.dat files off their unranked servers on new servers brought up with the same config files pre-failure? Is this something that will definitely not work?

Can a mod fix the issue?
