I have a love and hate relationship with the AI. Basically they made the AI to want YOU to be the hero so they tend to leave the main objective to you. But if its getting close to the end of the match they all rally at the main objective. I actually like this cause it does give it that Hollywood’esque block buster feel to matches. Were you struggle and struggle and struggle and then at the last moment all the cards fall into place and you pull out a win at the very last moment.
Only two things I hate about this approach to AI. They don’t take player class into consideration. So if I’m an engineer and the objective is to hack something and I’m holding down the area but the THREE operatives on the team will wait for me to be the hero. Its frustrating when you know you can only hold down an area for a finite amount of time and that time is wasted 'holding down the fort rather than trying to accomplish the objective. I wish that if the objective is to hack something and the player is not playing an operative then the operatives will make it their priority to accomplish the objective.
The other thing I hate about it is that the end game ‘overdrive’ mode is not just applied to friendly AI. Which can make for some super bs moments where you can defend the object all the way up to the final 1-2 minutes. And then all of a sudden out of no where the enemy will just becomes super awesome land if your team is not just set up right they just completely blitz their way at the last second to steal with victory.
But outside of that I actually am really impressed with the AI. Though its set up differently that most games. In most games they want YOU to be the leader so you can control the AI to some degree or they are programmed to specifically assist you rather than go off on their own agendas. This AI is the opposite of that. To get along with this AI you have to be a follower instead of a leader at times. Its annoying when you’re holding down the main objective and half your team goes to reclaim a command post. But there is a saying, if you can’t beat them, join them. Go with them. Faster they accomplish their objective faster they can get to the main objective. And moving in one cohesive unit is better than being divided.
So it in a sense is teaching you not only to constantly be aware what the main objective is but constantly be aware of what your team is doing. And to prioritize other objectives than your own but to help them out because the faster you get done helping them the sooner then can start helping you. Well its teaching you that or just to rock a heavy body type and bull rush objectives but then every team needs one person like that. So all and all I enjoy the AI. It makes matches unique. The AI is almost like L4D’s ‘director’ so no game is ever really the same even on single player. Some games make you want to pull your hair out, others make you realize how much fun this game really is when all the elements fall into together, and some give you such a rush of accomplishment that you wanna get your alpha male on and pee on your tv cause you just owned that s***.
