sending my map

(Matt-J) #1

ok, iam sendign a college admissions guys my map, he wants to see soem of my work, i applied for a video game desgin course, so he said a map for a game is more than enough for a portfolio. So I am sending him the following
-Et install
-Et Pro Install
-All map files/custom textures i made with file paths

now od i need to send him the textures i used?i know alot of them are part of the original 6 maps, but there are textures from other custom maps i used aswell, should i find them, take them out of hte .pk3’s and send them too?

TBH, I’d start with a revamp of your spelling and grammar. If your submission is written the way your posts are written, it will create a very poor impression. As is, I had no idea you were a college level student.

In any case, I’d dumb it down and send him a demo (avi) on a CD, clearly labeled of the map being played and then tell him if he’s interested, that you’ll install the game and map and show him how the map works.

Making a demo (< 5 minutes) allows you to control what he sees and to cherry pick the best parts of your map.

While I don’t know his background, you are counting on him being able to install the game, launch your map, and play it - probably not a good assumption. IF he is able to do all of the above, then you are allowing him to control the flow of what he sees, which may be very different from what you intended.

If he likes orange and black, you dont have to include the custom-textures.

And why does he need ETpro for walking through your map?

In summary I agree with Ifurita.
A short AVI (techdemo-like) will be much better than giving him the compiled map and the game, because it doesn’t take him as much time as installing…time is money, you know.

hmm well i did make step by step instructions, but hte him seeing what he wants is somehting i never thought of… lol yea teh spelling is alot better, smae with grammewr, i jsut dont take asmuch care in my psots, i talk completely different when i am handing in important work or what not… i almost sound… smart  but yea, ive used fraps for my vids so far, adn they are only 30secs!, and shitty framrates and it jsut looks… like crap. so wut program would be best for that, i did have another thread on vids but they went from very low gaulity to supper high quality ways of making vids, i want an in bettween, i need to have it made in liek an haour.

Call me a grammar nazi, but it comes down to this. When people demonstrate they’re willing to take the time to try, then I’m willing to take the time to help, or at least try. You’ll notice that people who ask for basic help without even bother to try searching for the answer don’t get nearly as much help as those who make good faith efforts to discover the source of the problems themselves. Writing is the same thing. If you can’t take the time to compose a basic grammatically correct sentence, then that’s an indicator to me that you don’t really care, and therefore, why should I. To date, I’ve ignored most of your posts simply because I can’t be bothered to wade through your writing. So it’s really up to you.

From the admissions/recruiting/interviewing side, you probably have 1-5 minutes to make the guy go “wow, I want this guy in my program”. Therefore, you need to carefully select what he sees in that time. Making him spend 15 minutes installing a new program on his computer (assuming the IT department allows him to install applications on his own desktop) isn’t the way to do it. If you can’t cut a demo, you might consider creating a simple web page with screenies (800 x 600) at best detail, right lighting, and giving a narrative of what is going on. Ideally, the demo/page highlights your use of architecture, game flow, lighting, and dynamic game play

Given the time, a web presentation may be easier. If you go that route, and this works even if you do a demo, start off a high level. Show the overall view of the map (command map or top view of your map) describe the overall game objectives, then dive down to specific areas. Everything you show should make a point (custom texture work, architectural design, an area of the map that is designed to focus gameplay, areas of the map that contribute to dynamic gameplay). In other words, put yourself in the reviewer’s shoes. They are looking for someone for their game design course. So, if you were looking for a game designer, what skills and abilities would you be looking for and how does your map demonstrate that you have those skills,

good ideas. I was going to include a bunch of screens in the cd I am sending him, and some movies and i have already got a brief description of my map. I have spoke to him over the phone and the minimum requirements to the game design program are photoshop skills. So I laughed when I heard that, and he said that if I have created a map, thats more than enough to guarantee my acceptance, but still I want it impress him lol. thanks alot for the help

oh btw, no spelling errors :D;)
