Well, in the end it really doesn’t matter wherer we like or hate /kill for whatever reason, because ultimately this thread is about how to limit it’s usage, because something a server-admin sets up as a rule but is unable to enforce, will be ignored.
And lets face it, we all have a different idea of how the game should be played, and there are also many differnt servers out there run at different configurations.
As lanz said:
If there is a function that players can use at will, then it’s the developers fault if it can be misused. The developers might not see this problem during development but if it’s in the game and not an exploit it’s still a valid tactic. It really doesn’t matter if some like it or not, it’s there and can be used, thus it will be used.
This whole debate goes hand in hand with the discussion we had regarding gfx tweaking and the anwser is the same; if the game allows you to do something you don’t agree with, blame the developers for including it, not the players for using it.
If a player can use a function to his advantage, it’s his right to do so.
Let’s face it, no server allows you to do everything the game would theoretically allow you to to, every server I know of requires some minimal cvar settings, preventing you from tweaking your ET to the extreme, aka disabling all textures, setting details so low that trees lose their twigs etc.
So restricting your freedom to do whatever you can with your ET is normal, and aside from the already game-given options to change game behaviour (heavy weapon restrictions, max-lives, maps per campaign, friendly fire on/off, balanced teams…), mods introduced even more restrictable options. If the server admin thinks it will improve gameplay, limiting a weapon (PF/RG) to xx per team, limiting the amount of a class per team, limiting teamkills before a kick, limiting mines for the engineers, limiting or changing the amount of XP you need to level up … etc, all is possible.
This thread was originally started because the OP was looking for possible solutions of how to restrict selfkilling, whether a server admin implements it that is everybodys own decison, and your’s to not play on those servers if you don’t like it of course
Maybe you should stop defending selfkills, because no matter how legimitated you think the usage of /kill is, you also have to accept that a whole bunch of pub players find infight selfkills highly irritating, and would like to play on servers where it’s usage is limited. But something that’s not enforcable is usually ignored, if a server forbits spawnkilling, unless an admin is there to warn/kick the offenders, it will still happen, or do you think a server-rule message “no tweaked config on this server” would be followed without the server enforcing it? Ofc not :moo:
So maybe let’s just stop this selfkill yes/no discussion, its equally fruitless as the old XP yes/no discussion, everybody has it’s own preferences, and luckily there are enough servers for each faction out there, so everybody can play on a server that favors his own gameplay style
