Seanza's IRC guide

(Seanza) #1

I thought I’d keep up with tradition and introduce my IRC guide to the Dirty Bomb section of the forum as it seemed to be a big hit in the ET:QW & Brink sections. As always, feedback is welcomed. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments section. Spread the word of this guide to help others find out about the wonderful world of IRC!

What is IRC, and what is the point in it?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is basically a way of chatting to others via a server connection. It’s essentially a chat room. It’s extremely useful for competitive gaming, and of course casual gaming but isn’t as much as a necessity for this.

Which client should I use?
There are a variety of different clients, the most common is mIRC and this guide will be built around that specific client. However, you can choose whichever client you wish.

Downloading mIRC

Firstly, you’ll need to download your IRC client. As mentioned above, we’ll be using mIRC in this guide. Download the latest version here, save it on your computer then install it.

Click on the “Download mIRC” green banner:

A new page will open and then you will click on “Download now” here:

Installing mIRC

The installation wizard is is extremely easy to follow, however, here are some screenshots through each step for those who are not entirely aware of how to install mIRC (Buttons highlighted in blue are the ones you click):

mIRC Setup

The first thing you need to do when setting up mIRC is choosing your nickname. Nicknames may contain only letters, numbers and the following other characters: [ ] ( ) \ ` - _ |

Then you need to select your server. We’ll just be using QuakeNet for this guide!

QuakeNet:

After you hit the “Select” button, you’re ready to connect to the server, so go on, hit that connect button!

Joining channels

Adding a channel to your favourites is relatively easy. On initial startup, you should see this screen:

It will be populated with suggested channels, delete those, you won’t need them. Once deleted, get adding your own favourites by clicking “Add”

Once you have added all your channels, these should now connect automatically every time you load mIRC (make sure you have “Join on connect” ticked).

Suggested channels
#splashdamage (Official Splash Damage IRC channel)
#dirtybomb (Official Dirty Bomb IRC channel)

tries to click download button -> brainpoops -> “I’m an idiot.”

Seriously though, useful stuff!

(murka) #3

And you don’t suggest NNScript along with mIRC?

(Christophicus) #4

Isn’t NNScript incompatible with recent builds of mIRC? I recall having trouble with that a while ago.

I’d love to see SD utilize IRC to create a global chat function found on Dirty Bomb’s main menu page (that maybe even extends to game chat should individuals desire it to), that could be pretty darn handy. But alas, I’m veering dangerously off-topic.

(Seanza) #5

I totally do suggest NNScript with mIRC! I just figured it may be a little too advanced for beginners (it is!). Also, NNScript is no-longer being updated for mIRC, afaik. I have a .zip on one of my FTPs which I may share as it includes NNScript + mIRC 3.65, just don’t know if it’s possible to do that as it may be considered as warez.

Don’t forget to join #dirtybombbeta on QuakeNet to get hold of your key for beta access.

Well, pretty much everyone is there already, so no need to mention. BTW: Beta sux, nuclear rocket luncher destroys the balance completely, while Giant-horse vehicle is overpowered too, and it does strange sounds just like pink ponies that run around the bunker on Brink_defender.map, disturbing the defending team that is attacked with both reason and artillery of any kind, including a giant **** that falls directly from the sky from time to time.

(DarkangelUK) #8

The problem I have is the homing missiles that fire from the attack dogs, I think they’re already powerful enough with the laser eyes without needing missiles as well.

(kamikazee) #9

Another note: if you don’t want to bother with mIRC’s registration process, there are always opensource / free alternatives like KVIRC.

(mcwattersm) #10

Sean, less time posting tutorials and more time organising ET LANS >:D

Reveal yourself!

(prophett) #12

Nice guide. I hope IRC will be the most popular medium for finding scrims/teams, etc…, rather than xfire, steam, or third party sites like most games nowadays (in NA anyway).

Some familiar old faces climbing out from under whatever rocks they have been hiding under the past few years - good to see. Can’t wait to play it.

(mcwattersm) #13

Your favourite Canadian.

No, the other one!

I don’t have a favourite Canadian, I love them all! Milk bags ftw.

bump this guys! IRC Quakenet! #dirtybomb

Sticky this!!!

(bosnak) #17

Honestly, you don’t need to have the client anymore. I am from the Shootmania community and I made a website (I hope I can off-link here) www.shootmaniacompetitive.com (nothing fancy, simple and efficient) where it’s just an embedded IRC client with direct access to the main channels we use. Just runs in browser. I am still waiting for a key for Dirty Bomb so I can start getting involved here as well

(Mustang) #18

I tend to use http://webchat.quakenet.org/ on public computers, but on my own it’s just easier to have a dedicated client.

Might want to update this post with the name change + the images aren’t working. (Your account has been suspended?)

Cheers for the heads up. Hosting expired, will have to renew tomorrow (payday).
