Sdk?

any word if there’s going to be a software development kit for Brink? i know that there’s been one for ETQW and Wolfenstein, but i havent heard anything yet about brink.

im not really that interested since i’ve never had the patiente to do it, but i have a friend who’s all crazy about the idea of mapping in brink and the new possibilities that the SMART system introduces.

In one of the recent video interviews with Ed Stern they asked this question, he said they can’t announce anything at the moment, but did highlight that SD have notoriously released SDK’s for their previous games… read into that as you will.

EDIT: Here it is

Judging from the way he said it, i assume there’s probably going to be one for Brink as well. thx

I read it as somewhere between…
…if it was upto SD most definitely, but before we can confirm anything we needs the nod from BS…
…and…
…this is pretty much at the back of our minds for now, just wait until the epicness has been released and then ask me again

(Seyu) #5

I doubt it, how are they gonna sell the DLC then?

(Diablo85) #6

They can keep the DLC for the console crowd who appears to love buying things that used to be free. Can’t explain otherwise why DLC always sells so good on consoles…

Without a SDK the PC version is going to be a big fail. There won’t be community content to prolong the games lifespan and there won’t be a competitive community because they won’t be able to mod the game up to competitive standards.

And besides, Splash Damage always supports modmakers since they where once a mod team. Also the game Oblivion from Bethesda both has paid DLC and a SDK. So I don’t see any reason why there won’t be a SDK.

You can have control over the game without actually having to mod it. They said previously that a lot of the game config will be controllable server side to enable/disable/set variable options.

That aside, an SDK would be nice yes… and it’s possible to release DLC and still have user created content as well. ETQW had a ton of user stuff, yet there was still a great call for official maps.

Fixed it for you. DLC has rarely been free on consoles.

gee, maybe because of RANKED servers

(Diablo85) #10

Maps and other updates to the game used to be free on the PC. That was my point. You are right about that console gamers got screwed over right away. Mostly thanks to Microsoft being greedy and wanting a share of every sold DLC and blocking most free content updates (see TF 2 update patch for the Xbox 360 that Valve wasn’t allowed to release for free.)

(DarkangelUK) #11

When products don’t sell well, companies stop selling them… if there’s demand… they’ll keep producing them. Sure console owners got screwed from the beginning, but they started paying from the beginning. Can’t really blame them of course, since there was no real alternative if you wanted to freshen up your fave game.

(Dormamu) #12

First, Bethesda needs to milk this game dry before releasing the sdk. I recon they enforced this on their “partnership” contract.
My prediction is: From May, we will have to wait 6 to 10 months, before the sdk is release  …tic…tac…tic…tac

(RumRunner) #13

dorm. i doubt that would be the case. with oblivion-fo3-fnv, the mod tools, and such were released with the game, and as far as the geck for fo3 goes, i am pretty sure that was released a week before the game was (forget exactly when). but both SD and Bethesda are rather supportive of modding communities. now what all exactly is released for brink is questionable. but all long-running fps’s, i.e. ones that are still played by significant numbers of people after 8+ months, have mod tools/sdk released. cod and such NEVER have mod tools released, and so they die after 3-4 months or so.

sdk and map-making add life to pc fps’s that dlc’s and such are incapable of adding.

(Herandar) #14

Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops died within 3-4 months?? Oh, on PC…

(SockDog) #15

It’s this sort of vagueness which is a little disheartening. Not sure where and why it hurts to say what the plan is with the SDK, tools, servers etc in here or on the Beth forums. It’s info that most people won’t ask in interviews so why hold it back.

(.Chris.) #16

Bethesda have release the GECK (modding tools) with the past two fallout’s games which also contain DLC.

Splash Damage released an SDK with their last title and has provided extensive modding and mapping support for their past two games.

I think it’s more a matter of when than if.

(CVIChEK) #17

It will be released, just most likely not with the game itself but a month or 2 later

(RumRunner) #18

and again “died” being a relative term. i.e. mw2 and blops on steam after 3-4 months had consistent playing population generally equal to or lower than that of older fps’s such as CS:S or TF2. (mainly because the aforementioned mw2 and blops suck (and also have no sdk or map making tools what so ever, activision wants their $15 for re-skinned maps)). this sharp decline in consistent playing population would be what i would consider “dead”. it does not necessarily have anything to do with pure numbers, merely a sharp decline in population.

not to mention from what i’ve noticed map-packs and the like never really do that well on the pc. because long-running fps’s all have mod tools. on consoles where there is no other choice they help and sell really well. most on pc however view them as mere rip-offs and re-skins (which most of the time they are), and see that many map-makers would be capable of creating better maps had they the tools to do so, and are generally annoyed by such things.
