SD, I'm not mad, I'm disappointed

Usually, I’m not that hard on developers. Game development is not an easy thing and I don’t think any of us who haven’t worked in the industry can really understand everything that is involved with and can go wrong with development.

However, I gotta say I’m a bit disheartened. It’s not that I think DB is going in a bad direction, rather it’s going in no direction. Development seems to have stagnated, even for a game nearing release.

And it seems that devs aren’t putting that much effort into listening to the community. Both here, on Steam, and on the subreddit the discussion on double time has come up with no input from the devs on what their thought process abd intent is. There are many issues that have not been resolved, and balancing seems to have very little priority put into it as of late. Hell, even the boosters are a bit…dumb. they don’t work like you’d think they work. In fact drops for event cases don’t make sense. They are based on play time rather than just RNG.

I want to root for you guys. I really do. I love the game. But you’re not giving me much hope.

Are there some particular things you have issues with? This is vague… Just the pace of development is the issue?

(AnonOmis1000) #3

Sorry. I hit submit before I finished typing.

Whenever Double Time complaints come up on the forum, they get downvoted to hell. It obviously isn’t as important as people who are against the Double Time mechanic make it out to be.

Anything else you have a problem with?

For Dirty Bomb, and Splash Damage, some may consider this a low point in development. Just wait until content becomes more vibrant in terms of community listening, and general content creation by SD.

Fair point. however, seems that there is a lot of unrest in the community. A lot of people have a lot of issues with how things are going and I usually don’t agree with them, but I find myself struggling to make a solid counter argument.

There’s a whole raft of issues with no eta in sight

  1. PINE…APPLE…JUGGLER <-- no I will never stop pointing out this ridiculous thing till it’s fixed

  2. healing station graphics still left on the ground is still a thing

  3. c4 droppng through the ground is still a thing

  4. Can’t join 11/12, 13/14, 15/16 servers as they are “full” despite not being full is still a thing

  5. The uptick in aimbotting/triggerbotting was pointed out WEEKS ago, and is even more prevalent today

They aren’t cosmetic or mere trifles. These are things that should be priorities. They vastly affect the flow of the game as well as overall playability.

Well, if you hit rock bottom, the only way is up I suppose.
However, I wonder if DB stops making enough money to make it worth of continuing development before that happens.

Rock bottom is DB closing. Low points are not rock bottom.

I must agree on the health display, that’s really annoying, where the health station is destroyed, yet the health circle on the ground is still visible :L

(AnonOmis1000) #12

It happens for both teams so I either get paranoid thinking there’s some enemies around the corner because I can see the aura, or I think I can get heals but there ain’t nothing there.

It’s even worse when it persists into the next half on stopwatch. Hell I think there have been times I’ve seen those auras when a health station was never placed there.

And then there are those audio bugs that make it sound like an MG is being fired constantly in one location.

(Szakalot) #13

all this and probably due to most of the mercs being already released : P

(AnonOmis1000) #14

Not really. I’d expect more bug fixes and optimization now that we only have one merc left to release. I’m not expecting full blown content updates. I want things that are broken to be fixed.

im not sure it works like that, i.e. people that work on mercs and new content are probably not working on bug fixes. This aint one person making a game you know.

I want things that are broken to be fixed too. And its good to point them out, just don’t get all personal with the developers ; ) (yes, they are listening)

(AnonOmis1000) #16

I’m not trying to get personal. Just giving criticism.

Luckily, there aren’t very critical bugs around, other than a few client/server objective state syncing issues. I’m happy enough with Dirty Bomb ‘as is’, and I’m confident that the rough edges will be fixed in due time.

I’m just a bit sad that it’s apparent that Dirty Bomb is maintained by a bit of a skeleton crew, at least on the technical side.
Content creation is a bit slow, and most things we’ve seen now have been tweaked re-releases that at this rate, could have been done by just one programmer.

Exedore let slip that the person responsible for Aimee is the same person that does the bugfixing. To me, that sounds like there is indeed one programmer at work.

Let’s not be mistaken, there are different disciplines at work that span many different people’s job descriptions on both Nexon and Splash Damage’s payroll. An implicit event like ReV takes quite a bit of resources to pull off, that Cycle shop doesn’t program itself and the different elements have to be designed by someone.

It just seems like everything takes forever. The bug on Trainyard can’t be difficult to solve, why isn’t it solved? The exploits on Market are long, LONG known and could have been fixed with one press of a button, yet that still hasn’t happened either. Low-hanging fruit that could have been fixed in a short afternoon.

Not sure what’s going on, but after Exedore’s streaming session I’m beginning to believe that Nexon and SD are not in a healthy working relationship. Seems like they’re afraid of each other’s opinions, and that’s holding things back.

Imagine if SD ran an airline company.

plane loses wing

‘Yeah, we’ll look into it’.
