I can imagine that ydnar will be very busy with coding cool thingies into the D3-engine then SD is on crunch-time for Quakecon’s presentation.
But i can also imagine that he gets inspired by the engine a tries to figure out if new ideas can also make their way into q3map2 and the q3-engine.
I think it’s his hobby to code stuff he likes to.
A lot of pro-level-designers are mapping for their own pleasure too.
So why not code?
What else could you possibly ask for? That’s my question.
Most of the “features” people want these days are either impossible to make happen at the compile stage, or are exceedingly difficult to make happen at the compile stage.
Features requested here are, for the most part, better.
But you should hear some of this stuff. The “mappers” I refer to don’t seem to understand what’s being handled by the game engine, graphics engine, editing tools, or compiler.
I like the Q3map2 the way it is.
If you see it critical, how many maps are really released with all possible features avaible in q3map2?
Q3map2 is one Tool for 5 different games, offers radiosity, smooth and crisp shadows, a little bit bump-mapping and l33t
model-support.
All theese features with cool compile times.
I can remeber my first Terrain-Map for Urban Terror back in 2001 witch took nearly two days to compile.
So if ydnar stops developing the tool would be good enought to help us out. But he is a very creative guy and I’m sure he will surprise us with some new cool features (like the lightstyles fpr q3 in the last update.
The source for q3map2 is available. Even if ydnar stopped working on it, that wouldn’t prevent anyone else from taking up the task. Of course, it might take them a while to get up to ydnars level of q3map godhood. :moo:
That’s a question in and of itself. We know GTKRadient is suffering from a lack of developers, would someone pick up q3map2 if ydnar had to focus more on DIII development? I would if I had the programming skills neccessary, but I don’t.
I see it this way:
Q3map2 will live on, but won’t be updated so often. Maybe only important bugs will be taken care of first. It’s his baby, and the only way I’d accept someone else working on it, is if it was part of a big open sourced project.
There are still a couple more Q3 engine based games on the horizon. Q3map2 may not get as many updates as it does now, but the end isn’t exactly near.
