SD/anyone play Avalon Hill games ??

Was wondering if any SD guys ( or any forum goers) ever played any Avalon Hill games - like panzer leader or (my fav) squad leader ?

Im wondering what games (esp pre video game era games) SD guys were influenced by, or rememeber fondly. Theres a reason I ask.

Before ET was announced, I had tossed around the idea of making RTCW maps based around porting some game play elements/ideas from squad leader. When ET was announced and I got an idea of what it was going to be like, and that the Q3F guys were on the job, I shelved the ideas.

The ideas I was interested in are scenario based maps (which ET essentially is) The other idea, one discussed in various threads, would be very hard to pull off, is to have different/random/variable objectives for each map. The thrust of that would be to create a different play experience for same physical map.

Im interested in mapping for ET, and would be happy to join a collaborative effort. Im interested in the game play design and engineering aspects of the map, and discussing various ways to implement the many ideas Ive seen posted in these threads. There is alot of potential in this game to do things w/ maps that would not require modding ET, or SD having to patch it.

If anyone is interested in continuing this discussion, I have some ideas Id love to eloborate on

thnx

Avalon Hill made board games, looks like they were bought by Hasbro. THey made Squad Leader, Panzer Leader, Panzer General, Tactics, Tactics II, Axis and Allies to name a few of the well known ones.

Squad Leader was a game that begged to be ported to a video game. M$ released a series of games called Close Combat that was more or less Squad Leader, and that game was almost fun.

I was just wondering if the some of us ‘older’ fraggers started gaming w/ board games …

Im working on some map ideas and I have a question. RTCW beach map had artillery that would hit the beach in a few spots (always same spots). I want to make a trigger for artillery barrage that would land in, say, 9 of 12 pre-chosen spots. The idea would be to have 12 destructable objectives for the map, but have a trigger that would launch a barrage that would randomly chose 9 objectives to land on and destroy. So after this event there would be 3 destructable objectives left for one team to destroy.
Is it possible to have a trigger for a pre canned barrage ? Another possibilty would be a barrage that destroys roads/intersections to force a mover to take a differnt path, can that be scripted?

The crux of the ideas Im mulling would be to create maps that play abit differently each time. I think the maps are big enough, its really a question of doing something the game already supports.

I am an old boardgamer.
Have played tons of Avalon Hill games.

Favourite ones:
Russian Campaign, Diplomacy, Candidate, Victory in the Pacific, Civilization (this one beats Sid Meiers one by far!), and the civil war series I cannot remember the name of (released in the early 90:ies)

Avalon Hill made some very great games, and wargaming today would look very different without them.

Too bad they got sold :frowning:
