SD: 2 simple changes that would greatly improve gameplay [PC]

(Apoc) #1

One of the main issues with brink on PC at the moment, and you hear everyone complaining about it, is the buffing/reviving/obj system of one button does all and the way buffing/reviving/obj is implemented.

There are a few problems both generally and specifically for PC:

Generally

[ul]
[li]Players commonly buff the health of other players when actually wanting to revive, leading to their death due to excess time standing still trying to revive the right person. This can also ruin games, spending your last pip buffing a soldier standing next to the incapacitated engi you are trying to revive so they can defuse is an awful way to lose.
[/li][li]Same happens with soldiers handing out ammo when trying to plant, and engis trying to construct or disarm and handing out buffs instead.
[/li][li]The buff indicators are much more readily available than the revive ones, sometimes you have to circle a dead body for what seems like an age as a medic until the “press X to revive” button appears…
[/li][li]Being moved by the buffing system or obj system is also very annoying, means that often you get pulled off higher levels and into enemy fire. The worst example of this is when i was playing engi, i was walking through a vent and heard a “click”, i looked down to see a mine, so i stayed still and thought “w00p ill just disarm it”, i pressed “X” to disarm, but sadly, the animation to disarm requires more room (apparently) so i found myself being moved off the mine so my character could disarm it from the side with the normal animation…obviously the mine blew up and i died.
[/li][li]Having to do all plant objectives in one go also seems stupid, if i put a box on the wall, then fall over before i can type in the code to activate it, i don’t understand why it would vanish into thin air as a result.
[/li][li]Command posts have the same button as buffing/everything else, so buffing when you spawn often means you get randomly pulled into the cp and left behind by your team…not good if your trying to rush.
[/li][/ul]
PC Specific

[ul]
[li]Due to the faster paced gameplay and killing speed on the PC, the animations used in this game go from annoying to suicidal. For instance, trying to revive someone on PC when there is someone else around is pretty much suicide, firstly you have to move at the right angle for the prompt to appear, then throwing it takes a while, then of course your camera gets skewed off to a random direction. Half the time you just get shot trying to get the prompt.
[/li][li]This goes for all other animations, there is no place for them in PC, the revive one is the worst and most important in my opinion.
[/li][/ul]

Solution

  • allow players to bind to revive/buff to different keys
  • Tweak the animations and pulling of buffs and revives

    In detail

Allow players to have the option to bind buff and revive/obj to different keys.

[ul]
[li]we have plenty of spare keys
[/li][li]i cant imagine it would be that horrifically hard to implement
[/li][li]would stop the buff instead of revive problem, would mean players could do what they are actually trying to do.
[/li][li]Wouldn’t have to be default, just having the option would be nice
[/li][/ul]
The weird pulling thing from reviving and buffing should be removed and the revive prompt easy to access, with the pulling i mean purely the camera movement. I can live with the model being dragged so you can catch up with people you’re trying to buff, but there’s no need to yank my camera round stupidly fast so im facing the complete wrong direction without even realising. Same goes with revives, the prompt should always be there, then you should be able to just throw the syringe without dragging your camera onto them. As when you try to revive while running over someone, the animation drags your view to the floor then behind you, making quick reviving impossible.

Finished

Would love to know if this is being worked on, or how hard it would be to implement, its just driving me crazy when playing medic, especially in comp matches, trying to revive someone straight in front of me but then getting gunned down as i couldn’t get the prompt.

Custom fonts disabled has got to be one of the best things about this messageboard.

Anyway, which of this list are the two simple things?

Yea sorted out the font thing, it was just as i wrote it in word…wasnt any funky font.

The 2 things were the 2 bits in the solution:

  • allow players to bind to revive/buff to different keys
  • Tweak the animations and pulling of buffs and revives

edited OP to make it clearer

(Ashog) #4

simple thing list number nazi? does it matter how many they are?

+1 to OP.

+1 to OP

we need this yeah

Ah right yeah, the animations are a pure console measure. Why the hell the PC ever got that shoved down it’s throat remains a mystery.

Cannot disagree

I can only agree, in fact

+1

(Rosie the Riveter) #8

Very nicely and succinctly worded

These features can be extremely frustrating when what you want and need to happen at that very instant gets “hijacked” by a second function.

(darthmob) #9

Full ack!

There is something wrong with this. Sometimes it does take like five seconds until the icon appears. I wonder if it happens when there is something in the way. It’s so bloody annoying and drives me into a rage and I’m pretty confident that this behaviour is not intended.

Too bad there is no demo support to have a closer look at it.

(PsYcHo) #10

100% agree!
SD, here at him!

(AnthonyDa) #11

It took ~2weeks for few guys without any SDK to have a different bind for revive/give health for Wolfenfail (2009).

It shouldn’t be that long to do something similar for BRINK (PC!) for SD, they even have the source code. Unless the PC version only deserves 1/2 week delayed console patch only?

(Kurnuttaja) #12

The problem is not only with medic/engi, it is super annoying as soldier as you get more XP from giving more ammo and then throw the ammo to a wrong guy and waste a supply pip. Why does the auto camera thing always pick the wrong guy when I already have one highlighted (turns around and throws ammo to a guy with almost full ammo)?

(Apoc) #13

Has there still been no explanation as to why PC gets everything later than consoles? Cant help but feel like SD are prioritising, and aparently consoles are more important…

(sh4d3Z) #14

They outnumber us. That’s the only thing I can come up with that makes some sort of sense. It’s sucks for us… but we should be used to it by now. If they give us an SDK, all will be forgiven.

Also, I agree with your OP. Nothing annoys me more than going for an objective, hitting ‘F’ while looking at it and instead of working on said objective, I dash 10 yards across the room to disguise as a dead enemy (playing as Operative obviously). The game fails at telepathy.

(gamma001) #15

+1
exactly how i feel. We have key boards for a reason! There are 100+ keys, no need to use one for everything

(.Chris.) #16

Because they got one small update and a stats site before the PC? Lets ignore the fact that the PC has received more updates overall than the consoles and proclaim the sky is falling…

(Apoc) #17

Well as far as updates go, there havent been many, but the point is that PC got many PC specific updates. The general updates that are the same for all platforms are released to consoles first, even if they are the same content…(it would seem). Also no one was going crazy, it was an off topic ponder  chill

(BMXer) #18

PC received more updates because the PC version was/is more broken. I doubt it has anything to do with favoritism or anything like that.

Brink is an Xbox360 game. They didn’t quite finish porting it to the PC by May 10th. So they are letting us PC players beta test their port while they finish it in the form of client updates.

On topic, +1 to everything Apoc said. The best way to describe revives in Brink is WONKY. Do what Apoc said and make it less wonky plz.

(Je T´aime) #19

I agree with this stuff also, and ps- apoc i played last night with you where you just use ur pistol to kill all enemy team last night lame!

(riptide) #20

+1 to OP

I do that too, it’s more reliable than SMGs/ARs especially at a distance (less dmg fall off too). If I could carry 2 Ceagles I would.
