Scripting - The programs to use?

(stadilainen) #1

I’m currently using notepad since Word kinda fked my scripts up

But I think there must be better FREE programs to write your own scripts.
What programs are you guys using? Please provide links if possible.

Thanks.

i just use kedit, it comes with KDE utilities i believe. it’s simple and quick. don’t confuse it with the windows version of kedit. when i get more into scripting i’ll rig something up with keyword highlighting but for now straight text is fine for me.

NOTEPAD RULES!

The simple Editor that ships with Win2K/ WinXP… you don’t need anything else to just type the stuff.

i recommend crimson editor…very easy to use…does some syntax highlighting already for the ET scripts and you can also configure it to do any type of custom highlighting you want.

Notepad for me

I’m using vim, VI Improved, more information at www.vim.org

I use vim in both Linux and Windows. It’s a very fast and versatile editor but a bit tricky to get into for beginners.

(kamikazee) #8

Wow!
Hadn’t heard of a standalone Vim for windows. I think I may have found my new favourite all-platform editor.

BTW: You’ve included a “)” in your link to vim.org.

vim, also…why would one even bother with windows if they have linux

Wandering a bit off topic her. Well, here at home, where I usually map, I have 5 PCs (3 ordinary, one laptop and a file server) - the laptop and 2 of the “ordinary” PCs runs Windows XP, mostly because I game on these and it is still a bit hard to play Everquest 2 on Linux. The last “ordinary” computer and the server both runs Linux. The Linux PC is mostly used for web browsing and xterms (talking to computers at work using SSH) it is a really neat 1Ghz VIA C3 system booting of a 2GB compact flash card. At work I only use Linux (except my laptop which I drag with me everywhere I go.)

Now to the point; I work with Linux it is the OS of choise, the OS I know and find most suitable for my needs at work. But, I try to never let religion come in my way, and when I find that Windows fits my needs the best, I use that. I think that if I were to only swear to one system, nomatter which, I would find myself very quickly waking up one day as a Cobol programmer…

Since you sometimes HAVE to use a windows program like Oracle for a school assignment in my case?
Allso, I haven’t got my wine install running as wished.

ON TOPIC: Notepad, textpad, vim, doesn’t matter.
I could even live with DOS edit.com for a worst case, but it’s antique anyhow. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nobody uses Crimson Editor? Its the best. Google it.

(flower.Hercules) #13

I’m not religious about these things either … I use OS X, too  I still wonder why people ask these kinds of questions :stuck_out_tongue: What do you type in? You should use what is the easiest and smallest possible for these types of things. Word would not have been recommended in the first place. A nice feature to look for is indentation remembering. That is something I hate when I use gedit, when I tab in and enter to the next line, it will start at the beginning of the line - which is why I stick with vi for most things.

(Pytox) #14

I use Textpad(but it isn’t free :P)

(DerSaidin) #15

(No1_sonuk) #16

I use PFE.

(Diego) #17

I use the crimson editor, too.

(SCDS_reyalP) #18

I use vim but it isn’t the most user friendly thing in the world :moo:

edit:
I should add that it is worthwhile to obtain and learn a good programmers editor. Things like brace matching an regex search will save you a lot of time in the long run.

Editpad Lite

http://www.editpadlite.com

It tabs documents so you can have multiple .script, .shader, .arena, .map, etc. files open at the same time.

It also lets you easily associate those file types so you can double click on them while viewing the contents of a .pk3 in WiinZip or WinRAR for a little cutting & pasting.

Best of all it’s free for non-commercial use
