Screen shaking: HUD, visual information delivering

Feedback about the screen shakes at certain times.

When the EV blows the doors: it is shaking a little too much right now, in my opinion. Suggestion: keep the shake, but reduce it. My arguments are that the player will notice the shake even if it is reduced, due to the fact that the screen is stable most of the time. A sudden, small shake is enough, I think. Secondly, some people like myself will play this game for +2000 hours the next two years, so we might get annoyed over time if we feel the shake is too much. Nah, a subtle, low key shake is better.

Reloading: In duels, when every milisecond counts, too much screen shaking in reload sequences gives me an uneasy sensation. Suggestion: keep the shake, but reduce it.

There are other situations that creates screen shakes but I wanted to start with these two because they make me react the most.

Absolutely this. Especially the reloading view bob really annoyes me allready. Imho one of the major differences between a SP game and a MP game is the amount of fancy stuff you can put in. Things such as motion blur, extensive view bob, film grain, depth of field, etc, etc. When it comes to hardcore fps games like DB, with split second decissions that stuff gets in your way and feels more counter-immersive than the other way around. In a SP game, wich you may play for 15~30hrs, that is not such a huge problem, but in a MP game you might play for 1~2hrs a day for years, it is.
And aside from getting in your way gameplay wise it really strains me phisically. It’s really, really hard for me when stuff happens by itself, that my brain thinks, should be control by me. The first few days after I’ve installed DB I constantly felt sick and dizzy after I’ve played a couple matches. And after three days of playing I got a monster migraine. It really destroyed me and I couldn’t play anything for three or four days. I tried to sleep as much as In can and slowly started to play DB again. And it kinda worked. Some evenings were ok, but not great, I allways kinda felt it immediately after I’ve played, or the next day; nothing major, but I felt it. Yesterday it got a bit worse again and I got medium hedaches. As much as I’d like to play right now, I just don’t dare.

My worst experience until now was Dead Space. The control of the character was just too clunky and Isaac did not what my brain expected him to do. It may be fine for playing with a controller, but his delayed movement really was on the edge of what I could bear. It felt like you were constantly walking in knee deep swamp. I overcame that by setting my dpi very, very high and probably played the game as it wasn’t intended by the devs to be played.

I played 350hrs of AvP3 and over 900hrs of Brink, and I never felt that dizzy in any of those games. Brink had that reload bob allready, but you could interrupt those animations and there was no left/right inertia* too; you just felt like you were controlling the char in every sec.

*probably strains me the most of all

About reloading in duels, and the animation/shaking, I went out to the servers to have a closer look: The thing that irritates me the most, is not the reloading animation and the screen shaking per se. Rather, it is the fact that the crosshair is moving slighly during the reload sequence. In W:ET, the crosshair is not moving during the reload.

Also weapon switch is affected aka this makes your screen bob a bit and your crosshair moves slightly. Haven’t found a way to turn it off yet, maybe there is something in the options.

Yeah the shake effect is a bit weird  some kind of visual shockwave and a soundeffect like your temp deaf with some low bass in de background is much better.

in the current build i like the shake. i was some distance away for a change when it happened and was cool. more global distance sound would be nice, even debris at a distance. but its a great que to whats happening.
