Scare out or support new players?

Hi,

I see a big lack in supporting new players to find the fun of the game.

I’m already played a long time Wolfenstein ET, so I will find soon into the game and get my first success in killing somebody, doing objectives etc.

But supposed I am an completly new player to this kind of gameplay & movement.

I am only allowed to play just a small kind of classes, the enemies would dominate me, because the newbie will not have any skill till now. And before he really gets into the game he would already be pissed, quit and uninstall the game.

So I would recommend to the developers following points (just examples):

  • newbies should for example get at registration 3x a special item. When they activate it, they will have the possibility for 24h to play all merc available. So they can test the first 3 times they play the game all mercs and can already check out their favorites
  • (not sure if something like this is already here?) their should be some special servers for newbies where its only allowed for players till lvl 10 to play on it. Its strongly recommended to the new players in the server browser to join these servers.
  • Every new players should have the possibility to buy just at the beginning 1 merc. For example in the daily missions add for new players 1 special mission to earn for example 30.000 XP and he will get 30.000 credits for it. So something the player will get in the first hours of playing. Also the second merc should be possible to buy much faster to keep the players into this game.

The highest priority at the beginning should be to keep most of the new players into this game. I am pretty sure that people start enjoying this game will also start investing money into it. So make it at the beginning easy for everyone to get fast the first credits and after the first 20 hours of playing, when they got into it slow it down.

At the moment it looks to me like you will scare new players out! A friend of me just started yesterday playing this game (so he dont get 30.000 credits at start) is already annoyed that for him its not possible to play sowbanez (or how he is called) and it looks like its a endless story to collect enough credits to buying a merc. And it’s a unreasonable demand to assume that someone new to a game will immediately invest money into it!

I hope you will really change something here. I would like to see Dirty Bomb getting popular!

i like the idea to help new ppl into the game without lowering the skillcap.

1 and 2 : great suggestions.
3: maybe. i like the idea to offer a rewarding but not too hard challenge to new players to help them over the first potholes in the learning courve.

there are servers restricted to lvl 6 and under, they could be promoted better

1 -> There will be a merc rotation so thats how you can test mercs before buying them
2 -> Already in the game, tho at the start of open beta/release there should be more of them and Quick join should prioritize those servers for low lvls
3 -> iirc at lvl 2 and 4 you get ~12k bonus credits

all of this just needs some tweaking

I’m very adamant about helping out the new players- it’s something every SD vet should know is important. With such a big skill gap in these types of games the new player will become easily frustrated or confused. I’ve played too many prev games that exponentially dwindle in pop because the game isn’t newbie friendly or the community treats them very poorly. It can’t be helped if someone is really good, but they can make the initiative to spread their knowledge and make it fun for others. I invite all players new/old/square/circle to chill with myself and friends in game, evac TS, or twitch chat- Kumbaya mofos.

The first and third suggestions are great. Allowing a newbie to try and then buy one merc along with the two default one would be a very loveable way to help players to start out. I am more doubtful with the second one though. It oftenly ends with higher skilled players invading the newbie area (with alt accounts most of the time), and actually new players can learn a lot by fighting against/with good ones. For exemple, as a TF2 player, when I started out the game, I had the luck to find a server where a lot of good players were playing, and I was able to learn a lot from them.

Nice to see some people also seeing a lack in the handling of new players.

For sure their will be some idiots creating new accounts to bash the newbies. But I think their will be less doing this.

Alternative way will be to analyze the stats after the first 5 matches and give the player a predefined skill. He is now only allowed to join servers for his skill, or higher skills. So higher skilled players will fast be banned to the servers where the newbies are playing. And newbies still have the possibility to play with better players if they want. But I am sure that most newbies prefer to play with other newbies. Only less like you see an advantage in playing with skilled once. Their will be for sure a lack of fun doing this, especially when you are not connected to a party of people.

easiest way to go about it is to give min&max.LVL requirements for servers
