save=shutdown

(FU|007|US) #1

well i read, read, read, read, read, and read some more
so i could learn how to make a nice, high quality map
i even got done with the allied spawn room (-textures)
then arose a horrible problem, i cant save my work!

any time i try to save that window pops up and says
‘radiant has encountered a problem & needs to close’

if anyone can think of anything that might be
the cause please for the love of god post it here

before anyone says this i will tell you all that
i have a brand new comp with windows 7 and:

  1. i tried running as an admin, but no luck there
  2. i tried running in compatibility mode, bad too

i m not so fit with windows7
(i tried it just for a few days - and i don t like it  )
as i remember right you have to give radiant some special rights to save it - its a little bit weird…
maybe q3map.exe, too. (dont remember)

maybe you have some “exotic” hardware (like me)
my radiant shutdown if i use my grafic tablet while the radiant is open :S

problem solved thank you guys

If you solve a problem you should explain how or which of the two links worked.

then second post but now i got a different problem: none of the textures are working! i made a map (just a basic test map) and when i went to play it i got this weird effect where they dont show up. its kind of hard to explain but anything put on the screen just stays there until something else is put there. i used lots of different textures thinking maybe the 1 i used 1st was the problem. there are walls/floor/ceiling when i shoot at them i can see the bullet impact (ex i used 1 of the ground textures i shot at it and dirt flew) up but i never could see the texture in the 1st place!

  • You haven’t Made you map completely closed (aka you are seeing the void)
  • Your skybox is bugged
  • You used caulk as a texture that the player can see
  • [unlikely] The vis compile screwed up

Are you using a fresh install to map? aka a different one to the one you normally play on.
What compile do you do? Do any errors occur?

(FU|007|US) #8

-map was closed for sure it was a simple 1 room test map
-1 room = no sky so i didnt set that up
-no caulk
-[unlikley] ok

my game is installed in a separate folder radiant doesnt access
tried a bunch of them and no errs but all gave a map with above conditions

The effect you’re talking about is called “Hall of Mirrors” (HOM). It happens when a face is missing or using an intentionnally invisible texture. If your textures were missing you would have the black and orange texture instead.

What can cause HOM :

  • Shaders with a “nodraw” surfaceparm
  • Vis errors (very unlikely as stealth said)
  • Holes in the map - would only cause HOM on the hole place tough
  • Overlapping brushes : Select one of the brushes causing HOM and delete it : if theres still a brush in the same place after you’ve deleted it, thats your culprit. (space bar is the shortcut to duplicate objects)
  • Mishaped / complex geometry : Playing with vertices or using the clip tool too cut a brush too much could cause bad faces to be created - altough this happens very rarely on the later versions of GTK. Try using “brush cleanup”.

i have many missing textures but i was only ones that werent [mostly under common]

-nodraw isnt defatul right? i didnt put it on
-vis errs anrent caused by win 7 right?
-no hloes and the whole maps HOM
-no brushes overlapping
-its a simple empty room so probably not but wheres ‘brush cleanup’?
