The satchel charge skill takes time in order to learn how to effectively use it. Gotta figure out where you can place your explosives so that enemies won’t immediately notice them, giving you time to detonate them at the appropriate time. Since they can’t be quickly tossed and activated, they can only be used as a defensive tool.
They are not worth a level 5 ability status. They do good damage, but you have to remain in direct line of site to spot the charge in order to detonate it. You can get killed waiting to deatonate.
You guys are mistaken. You don’t need line of sight. You can see them through walls and then detonate them individually by putting your crosshair over them and hitting the use key. Or if you want you can detonate them all at once by selecting them and hitting your grenade key.
A perfect situation would be to plant 2 around an objective and then run off to kill guys. When you hear the announcer say they’re hacking the objective or whatever you detonate them.
They’re a little trickier with friendly-fire on of course but they’re not too different from old style satchel charge traps from ET.
Satchel charges are great for defending command posts. They are also pretty good at protect repair objectives or hack objectives. The moment you hear the announcer say the enemy is capturing or planting, select the satchel and then hold grenade throw. BOOM goes the dynamite :).
However satchels have weak armor and are visible with a red glow. You will have to hide them well.
Place them next to a friendly mine to guarantee a kill, after planting a charge on an objective plant a satchel somewhere close and shoot it when someone tries to disarm it.
So, al last, are they worth the point? It seems yes.
And I repeat the question (I think it could be interesting to know): do satchel chages stay after death?

Yes they do.
And since you can set them off from anywhere on the map they work wonderfully when placed near objectives. Die, respawn, and if the enemy is placing a charge/hacking/etc. hit “g” or aim at one and hit “f” and BOOM dead enemies/safe objective.
I use them all the time with my Heavy Soldier to great effect.
I’ve never tried placeing them on a wall/ceiling as Jess Alon suggests, I always assumed they were like mines. I’ll have to try out this new strategy!
[QUOTE=xdc;311579]my review of rank 5 abilities
universal downed fire:
okay when you are heavy/medium, less accuracy/health. Usually players kill your body before you are able to use your gun, and sometimes by the time you are able to use your gun you respawn/revive/die
soldier satchel charge:
it plants very quickly, but the way you detonate it is cheesy. you have to press the ability button and G to explode your charge. You should be able to throw a charge/explode it remote instead. i think the point can be spent better elsewhere
medic revive grenade:
worth the point, revive teammates in groups, and from range
engineer lvl 3 turrent:
turrents in brink are weak sauce. the best use you will get out of turrents is on defense, their line of sight is very small
operative emp grenade:
worth the point, not really much to say, helps on mines/turrents/he charges/hack boxes/ etc

I disagree with everything said here except for the EMP Grenade comment.

3 gameplay facts:
-Satchels make great decore lights above objectives!
-One satchel can be detonated by targeting them across the map by pressing F or all together with highlighting satchel ability and G
-Lazarus grenades revive through walls. Massive plus!
1 Opinion… Downfire can hurt the enemies a lot and definitly is worth a point.
resort is the only place i dominate with it on defense i found it best just out of choke points behind stuff so as people can not see then you can kill light no health buffs with one 2 for medium 3 for heavy.
