s_numberofspeakers ?

(CPT C@pslock) #1

Hi
So what’s the default number and what is the number that should be used for 5.1 sound?
I hope that someone can answer this.
Maybe it’s even possible to get an answer from the devs about this cvar?
Thanks in advance

Is it not detecting your speakers correctly?
What Windows do you have?

If you have your speakers correctly set in your windows control panel. The game should set the value of this cvar correctly.

I frequently switch from onboard 5.1 sound to USB headset (using the Windows CP) and the game makes the adjustment seamlessly. I’m on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

EDIT:
If you really need to know, I think the LFE channel counts as it’s own discrete channel, so 5.1 = 6

(Mr E Unknown) #3

My dev console claims the default is “6”.

Assuming this cvar is genuinely used then yes - “should”.

I note that my cvar is always set to “6”, even when using USB headphones and ensuring the Windows control panel is set to “stereo headphones” as the speaker configuration. It also doesn’t appear to make any immediate difference in terms of volume or quality if I switch the cvar between “6” and “2” (not even if I restart the game) - so are we sure it’s actually used/relevant?

(McAfee) #4

You are right, it’s always on 6. I thought since I had no problems when switching device that it was just auto-adjusting. Maybe it auto-adjust elsewhere? on run-time?

I’m starting to think it may be the amount of speaker the sound engine uses to generate the sound environment. And then your sound drivers handle the down-mixing/up-mixing from that point. Or it may very well not be used.

(CPT C@pslock) #5

So if 6 is 5.1 sound, why is it set to default?
Maybe this cvar is not supported by Brink, like the devs always tell?

(Mustang) #6

iifc you don’t need to set any cvars
brink automagically picks up and uses your windows sound setting

(Mr E Unknown) #7

There was a previous post from Crispy (sorry, too lazy to go looking for the reference just now!) wherein it was stated that SD are (amongst other things) investigating why Brink doesn’t correctly pick up the right speaker configuration for some users; question is, how would you know if Brink has guessed correctly for your system?

At least, that’s why I’m interested in this (or similar) cvars.

(CPT C@pslock) #8

Yes i would like to check if the game detects in correctly.

(Crispy) #9

Do not change this cvar.

Use the in-game menus to change your speaker setup. Your speaker setup in Windows Control Panel must match your setup in Brink for it to work properly.

Only Windows 7 allows you to set up Voice and Speaker settings independently. Vista and XP do not have this functionality.

(CPT C@pslock) #10

Where can we change the speaker setup in-game?

(AnthonyDa) #11

What are you talking about? Windows 7 has a “communication” settings, which allows you to reduce automatically others apps sounds when there is a communication but nothing more.

Did I miss something? Because you can easily set your microphone & speakers volume/settings independently on at least Vista (maybe XP too).

(McAfee) #12

AFAIK Windows XP also had some kind of “voice” settings, but most apps ignored it anyway. I think it has to do with a push from Microsoft to try and unify a few things. Maybe it has to do with the Games for Windows certification.

(Deadwalking) #13

All 3 OS’s have the ability thru Control Panel to adjust inbound and outbound audio.

It is just that Vista and Win 7 utilize OpenAL more over D3D.

but the ingame audio settings are a mess, and useless.

even etqw and world of stupids …erm… warcraft doing a way better job here.
and the last mentioned is a rpg …

or is there a working way to do the following?
(taken from my config)

seta s_numberOfSpeakers "6" // 5.1 SPEAKERS
seta s_forceNumberOfSpeakers "6" // 5.1 SPEAKERS
seta s_volume_VoIPActive_dB "-50.0" // REDUCE SOUND WHEN VoIP COMES IN
seta s_volume_voipin_db "5" // VoIP INPUT BOOST - DEFAULT: -6
seta s_volume_voipout_db "15" // VoIP OUTPUT BOOST - DEFAULT: -6
seta net_allowTalkBack "0" // LOCAL VoIP LOOPBACK - USE 1 ONLY FOR TESTING !!
seta s_volumeMusic_dB "-60" // MUSIC VOLUME
seta s_volumeSpeech_dB "10" // AUTOCHAT VOLUME - EXAMPLE: "I NEED AMMO" # NOT VoIP!
seta s_volumeFX_dB "-5" // SOUNDEFFECTS (SHOOTING, FOOTSTEPS, ...)

Here’s what I have posted before for 5.1 troubleshooting:

First, ensure all speakers in your 5.1 setup are connected.

The settings in BRINK inherit exactly from the settings in your Control Panel. Other games use a different API to set up the sound, so will behave independent of your Control Panel settings.

To set up your audio in BRINK, please read the following steps:

For Windows XP / Windows Vista

[ol]
[li]Quit Brink
[/li][li]Go to Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback
[/li][li]Set your preferred playback device as the default
[/li][li]Click Configure and choose your speaker configuration
[/li][li]Click Test and verify that the device you intend to work with Brink is working as expected
[/li][li]If it doesn’t work as expected in the Control Panel, it won’t work as expected in Brink
[/li][li]Once your devices are working as intended, boot Brink
[/li][/ol]
Brink should mimic exactly the settings in Control Panel

For Windows 7

[/li][li]Go to Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback
[/li][li]Set your preferred communications device as the default
[/li][li]Click Configure and choose your speaker configuration
[/li][li]Click Test and verify that the device you intend to work with Brink is working as expected
[/li][li]If it doesn’t work as expected in the Control Panel, it won’t work as expected in Brink.
[/li][li]Once your devices are working as intended, boot Brink
[/li][/ol]
Brink should mimic exactly the settings in Control Panel

Everything else can be done from the in-game menus.

I’m sorry I can’t help more but right now my focus is on investigating reports where users can’t play the game, etc.

(AnthonyDa) #16

Well, this is now set as “wrong” or “incorrect”.

(Crispy) #17
Well, this is now set as “wrong” or “incorrect”.
No. This only relates to audio output.

In Windows 7 you can specify a Default Communications Device separate to a Default Audio Device, meaning you can have the VOIP from other players come out of your headset and the rest of the game sounds come out of your 5.1 speaker setup.

In Vista and XP you must have all audio output to the same device.

(AnthonyDa) #18

It’s the same on Vista (at least), just checked. Or we aren’t talking about the same thing.

(SpawnTDK) #19

well, the autochat crap is handled like player voip, thats more than anoying.
but it doesn’t realy mather because only a few servers have voip enabled, so boredom is everywhere. this isn’t a issue of the game, more a problem of useless admins…

and theres still no way to setup every soundchannel as needed, working with the cvars is a must.
i did have a working 5.1 setup, but the game still refused to play 5.1. s_numberOfSpeakers and s_forceNumberOfSpeakers haven’t changed that fact. sd does relay a way to mutch on the windows audio settings, and that a major flaw in my eyes.
