Rtcw

(hhhmmmmm) #1

K i just seen someone say grey matter/nerve said it is coo- to use rtcw textures/models etc and would like an answer or linky to the statement.
Started this thread so as not to hi-jack “priapismus” Assault beta thread :stuck_out_tongue:

I still can remember an interview with some Nerve or Gray Matter guy you said that it is totally ok to use textures from Wolf since both games are released under the same license. Guess that should include models aswell… ( ocr*D-Link Cpt meat)

Even if GMI/Nerve had said that, I think what id says would take precedence here.

And id has always made it clear that they do not approve of moving content between games.

I’ll tell ya the official word…

NOBODY KNOWS!!! Not even f00king activision.

I should imagine that was in the old days when ET was still envisaged as a bolt-on to RTCW.

They both have seperate license agreements (you know, the thing you undoubtedly didn’t bother to read and simply clicked on ‘accept’ to get into the games as quickly as possible :D), and as such are entirely seperate.

In other words, no you can’t use RTCW-exclusive content in ET.

But if you are planning on doing it, make sure you change the texture paths, or I’ll personally come around and nail your knees to your chair

“I’ll personally come around and nail your knees to your chair.”
Mental note “change paths or join the small bus”

Now i knew it was a brilliant idea to sit on the ground :stuck_out_tongue:

By the way:

BXpress: i have a question: is it ok, if i use RtCW texutres in my ET maps?
Lt.Dan : sure
BXpress: so i wont get busted?
Lt.Dan: nah its the same licence. people use rtcw for day of defeat maps
BXpress: okay thank you

This was from an interview with Dan Koppel from Gray Matter (GMI)…
I took this from www.level-designer.de

One other thing. I am NOT talking about ripping off prefabs from wolfmaps or porting them completely. This time it is about textures ONLY

Hm ar btw the only reason for taking taking textures from rtcw is because you are too lazy to take a look on the internet which is full of free - and still as great as rtcw - textures. Remember - google and sd searchbuttons won’t harm you

Yeah, troiuble is - as far as I’m aware Grey Matter had virtually sod all to do with Enemy Territory, other than producing part of RTCW which, while a damn good game, does not give them any say in how ET is.

Again, I’d stress it’s probably from an old interview when ET was going to be an add-on to RTCW (in which case it would come under the same license). However, ET is now an entirely seperate game (in the same way you can’t use Q3 assets in RTCW).

If it’s a more recent interview, then I’d say that bloke is talking out of his arse and shouldn’t really be commenting on something he has nothing to do with

Oh sod it, I’ll pretend to put a third install of ET on and read the license for once!
Erm, no I won’t, I think I deleted my download of ET. Bugger…

As for stealing textures, I have to say I do miss some of the RTCW ones immensly - particularly the town / village walls and windows ones. In general I do think the RTCW textures were superior to ET ones, and allowed for a greater variety of map styles (with ET you can do african, snow and rain basically :/), but to be fair to ET, at least the maps don’t end up looking like someone accidentally put the ‘desaturate’ filter over all the textures.

As for online textures - well, there’s a lot of free stuff out there, but very little (relatively speaking) in the way of high-quality stuff that fits right in. Currently I’m using some of Ydnar’s textures to death for a towny bit, but it’s only half a dozen textures or so - I’m really missing those town textures now (especially since while some ARE in ET, there’s not a single texture set that includes both a window and a wall FFS).

So far, several people have included RTCW textures, ranging from the odd one here and there to wholesale ripping (cough Marko cough). The trick here is to change the texture paths, don’t just copy and paste the texture directories over verbatim, otherwise your rips start showing up in radiant as valid defaults on other mappers’ installs. This causes us tons of problems if we have your map, causing us to get extremely angry, and delete your map, and slag you off lots publically (cough  cough).

So far no-one has got into trouble as far as I’m aware, but that’s hardly a rubber-stamp of approval from ID or SD saying it’s legal, so I leave it up to your conscience, since no-one (not even here) has given an official ruling on it :frowning:

(hummer) #10

Curious. If textures, why not models, sounds, and other assets?

I’d really like a straight answer, from someone official (no offense Gerbil  ) that puts an end to this…

(G0-Gerbil) #11

Wouldn’t we all?
Thing is, I take the EULAsthat come with RTCW and ET as 100% official, and they say you can’t. Not quite sure why people don’t just accept this, it’s not the end of the world really.

(hummer) #12

Yeah… that’s what I figured… but then when we have some people saying “Hey, lookit this interview by one of the developers…” even though the EULA is sitting there…

I’ll stick with the EULA until my conscience disappears or John Carmack PM’s me saying “Go for it.”

(G0-Gerbil) #13

Thing is, even if someone did say it was OK, legally I’d guess it’s not since when you click ‘accept’ the EULA becomes legally binding over and above anything else - it’s a permenant contract that you’ve signed up for.

The only way to absolve it would be for users to be mailled a new EULA that takes back the old one, and has it’s own ‘accept’. Of course, this could be bundled as part of the next ET patch if we are lucky spreads wild rumour

(Drakir) #14

I agree that the RTCW stuff should be abled into ET mapping, but one thing that remains is that u have to include all new textures and models into your map, and that will make a huge download if you are using alot of new stuff.

So what we really need is an official addon with most of the stuff we want included in it together with a server patch or something.

(joop sloop) #15

In most countries outside of the usa, the eula is not a legal document, so you’re not signing anything when you click accept.
Next to that some eula’s are downright illegal if they would be enforced in most european countries I believe…

(G0-Gerbil) #16

Possibly, but are you seriously suggesting that you could beat ID / ACtivision’s army of lawyers should it come up? You might win, but you’d be bankrupt (and stuff like this CAN affect kids, so don’t think cos your young you’d escape).

Of course, they aren’t very likely to go the legal route, which is why I said it basically boils down to your conscience as to whether you do it.

Personally I don’t - if I REALLY need something ET doesn’t have I’d rather hunt something suitable down from a free source or modify an existing ET one. Much as I love RTCW textures, I’ve seen an awful lot of 'em so a change is always good (and will make your map stand out).

I don’t particularly ‘look down on’ or disapprove of other people ripping ET textures, unless they cock up my own editing (hello Marko - oh and found Cassino does it too the other day). In which case you are scum and the lowest of the low

You being a generic you, not you specifically btw.
