RtCW textures

(chavo_one) #1

OK, I know, legally, it’s been said that any RtCW textures not provided with the ET .pk3 are not allowed for use in making ET maps. But I’ve been thinking for the last several days of map ideas, and I’ve realized something. The texture choices provided with ET are very limiting. There were only 6 maps released with ET, and therefore the locales are limited.

My frustration is that there are a lot of very good textures in RtCW. And now no one can use them (or more precisely, will use them). Demoneye, Pazur, and myself have all released maps since the release of ET, and I think we all realize the sun has set on RtCW for the most part.

So mappers have two options. One, use the ET textures and churn out clone maps. Or two, make your own textures.

The problem with number one, is that no one wants to play 100 different variants on the oasis theme. The problem with number two is, making your own textures takes a long time. And for some mappers, the ability might not even be there.

Does anyone else see this as a major stumbling block for ET? Is it possible there could be a reversal on the (legal) banning of non-included RtCW textures? Should I just make a lawrence of arabia map?

i’d love to see some place to go for textures, like mapcenter, they have quite a lot, i mean there are pages that show prefabs but none for textures (as far as i know…?), maby i should make a new section at my page…
i really think it’s great that max payne textures have been released for free (non commercial)

There are a number of good free texture sites.
The wadfather http://www.planethalflife.com/wadfather/ for example.

I remember when quake 3 came out and it had only 2 themes, gothic and tech. Everyone mapped those texture sets to death, but it took a long time before people become sick of them.

There is plenty of things which could be done, remember ww2 was not some grey landscape and alot of europe can be adapted to the current textures. The hardest part is planning a good map idea not the texture set.

The African compaign texture sets could be adapted to alot of locations night or day. The same with the radar texture set for central europe. There are plenty of user custom textures for Quake 3 that could be adapted.

I guess the locale I was thinking of was the european villiage texture set with rubble. There are a lot of cool ideas for those locations with the new objective possibilities, and wolf has some amazing textures for that location. I just don’t want to have to reinvent the wheel, when the wheel is sitting on my hard drive, taunting me.

What ?!?!?!?! i dont belive this!!! we cannot use RTCW ones in ET?
hows this possible its just like RTCW using same textures etc anyway! in ET… how come SD are alloewd to use them and mappers aint?!? dont make no sence at all!.. i for one want to remake some of my old RTCW maps for ET now i cannot do this unless i make all my own textures? this sucks big time!.. sounds like they dont want people mapping for this game… if they keep putting things in the way! :banghead:

Could someone clarify if it’s a case of “We are not allowed” or rather “the pk3s are locked and any attempts to include external textures will prevent the map loading” ?

The reality is that unless the pk3s are locked then people will use whatever damn textures they like unless SD decide to take up a load of legal cases against kids - which isn’t going to happen.

Unless it’s a case that SD are obliged legally to say you can’t use RTCW textures but in reality they’ll do nothing to stop you.

People please calm down, ranting and raving does not solve anything.

Lol you right - I was just having a “I feel like a rant” moment and the opportunity presented itself here  don’t mean to be a scaremonger!

ohhh i might just make a multiplayer section to et zone when the site is uploaded, now that i’m getting the hang of the texture making

I think the textures are enought.
I played rtcw long enought and worked with the textures in a lot of maps and i need sometihng new like ET delivers.

I don’t want to see a recompiled beach-clone with standart rtcw textures.

I think there are a lot of free texture-sources out there and you can completely build what you want with all the free stuff out there.

Like Sock said the egypt-style offers a lot of different stlyes. There are a lot of rtcw maps with the same bunker style textures over and over again.
People need to invent their own ideas and not rebuild old stuff.

You won’t, but now you’ll see oasis and goldrush clones. Those texture sets are so specific that any map will look like it’s the same city.

Please share your links to some good WW2 texture sites. I’m not familiar with any.

Not everyone wants to make an eqyptian/north african map. And 1/3 of the textures for ET are for this style.

True, but this has nothing to do with re-using RtCW textures. You let me use those tried-and-true textures from RtCW, and I promise you, I could still make a map that looked fresh. Uncreative people will always make clones, no matter what texture sets you give them. But why tie the hands of everyone because you don’t want to see rehashed RtCW themes from the uncreative?

Those texture sets are so specific that any map will look like it’s the same city.

But you can mix theese themes. For example a Tunesian Village with some egypt elements or a dig-site. (Just a quick idea)
Set this theme in the night or in the dawn could be very nice looking and completly new.

Here are some quick links for textures:
http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/~pbourke/texture/ (medium quality)
http://www.thewall.de/forum/showtopic.php?threadid=14918 ( A very long list. Some Links are off, others work. Just surf around)
http://amf.pocketmovies.net/textures/textures_img.htm (some nice skies to use with ydnars cool sky-shader for crips clouds  Textures need to be made tileable)
http://www.map-center.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=4 (Mapcenter.com Texture download. Good looking textures from the challenges)
http://www.3dcafe.com./asp/textures.asp ( A lot of textures)

There are some sticky threads with a lot of stuff and links at other forums like q3world. You will be very limited if you search for WW2 links only.

And 1/3 of the textures for ET are for this style.

Yes,but you hace 2/3 other textures and the fueldump/big-gun set offers a lot more. Why not doing a bunker theme set in the dessert?!

You let me use those tried-and-true textures from RtCW, and I promise you, I could still make a map that looked fresh.

I’m sure you can do the same with the E.T textures and some of the fresh new from the links i posted.

The main problem regarding textures I see is the size of file that it creates. Loads of new textures = large pk3 especialy if people create them all as TGA’s.

Ok for you ADSL’rs & CABLERS but spare a thought for us 56/64k users :frowning:

The download system for ET is different. When you connect to a server and dont have the map you are re-directed to where it is. (A HTML link to where the file is on another server) The ET engine has the possibilities of not downloading maps at snail pace.

Once you have a link to the map, use a download accelerator program to get the file faster. ET or Q3 for that matter is no different on file sizes. If people are really pushed for the file size then use JPG’s instead.

When crack.com went under, they released all of the textures for the game Golgotha into the public domain. Might be a good resource for ET mappers to breath some new life into maps.

Here they are broken down (requires FilePlanet id, sorry):
Group 1 - Birdseyeview
Group 2 - Birdseyeview
Group 3 - Embellisments
Group 4 - Environment
Group 5 - Miscellaneous
Group 6 - Buildings
Group 7 - Buildings 2

Hope that helps!
