A RTCW mod idea:
Top down view.
Could be interesting for a SP mod.

Not sure about using binoculars (could be some cone shaped magnified view) or the problem that enemies can be at higher / lower places (z-direction autoaim?).

i was thinking is this could actually be possible just by re scripting the controls and making use of the cg_thirdperson, cg_thirdpersonrange, cg_thirdpersonangle commands. if there is a command that centers the player view it could be useful to keep that view level as well

you could set the camera to be looking directly down on the player form a decent hight then if there is some command disable up/down mouse movement you have a makeshift top down shooter without any need to recruit programs and other difficult tasks

the weakness of this idea

  • aim is restricted to a totally level plane so you either make all the combat take place on flat ground that might make the game play a bit uninteresting or put the player in unfair combat situation where he is unable to effectively fight back
  • the camera rotates with the the player, this may/may not be what you want from a top down shooter
  • grenades wont be very controllable and could be a very interesting and tactical weapon if implemented better
  • the rtcw single player character animations are far from complete and im not sure if this would either be a lot of work to fix or even reacquire some coding

although in W:ET you could perhaps quite eaily use the to make a multilayer top down rtcw since all the animations work on all characters
