RTcW maps converted to ET (Village Ice etc)

Being a former member of HP, I have what we referred to as SDRD, severe depot relapse disorder. A friend of ours made his own rendition of the map with a few changes here and there to improve playability and such, I think it looks damn good! Needless to say it’s also fun to play. It’s for RTCW only and if anyone fells like converting his rendition to ET then I’m about 99% sure he’ll let me give it to a quality mapper. Here’s the RTCW version of the map for you guys to check out, it also has a dance club near the allied ops with flashing disco lights, When D_lights are activated, you have to strafe jump to get in though. http://www.happypenguinforum.com/Depot2Final.zip

Depot is mainly for servers with 64 player limits but when you have 30+ guys it gets quite fun indeed. In RTCW we ran it on our Happy Penguin, 64 player, server which was almost always full anytime of day, I’ve waited a half an hour to get in once, heh, gotta get my depot fill :). With 30+ players and all the nooks and crannies of the map, depot provided for some great fire fights and heated action, it’s all running around and very little room to camp. Well, there are a few camping spots but they have to be defended at the same time. This map was like the Viagraâ„¢ of RTCW.

So hopefully one of you guys are more dedicated than I as to making Deopt 2 into a quality Enemy Territory map. If you wish to inquire about this project you can reach me as listed below…

mh I think it’s normal that ET mappers now are yopied RTCW maps. Why? They have no ideas and they think maybe: "Hey ET is anyway a Dumping ground, We can still put on it. It’s the same with mods everybody has now a mod he thinks"yeah I’m great say god to me I have build a mod"but the mod is very silly an nobody like it.

as a side note: i really think that mappers that are trying to get popular (as in actually played maps) should consider 2 aspects: public fun and competitive fun. Most ET league admins/communitys would gladly embrace mappers with projects for maps. atm all the maps that are used on competitions are fun to play in public servers. but not all maps that are fun to play in public are playable in comps. dunno. i just think that clans and clan members should and could help mappers getting better custom maps. Venice map is atm a great map to play on a public server. And his creator is working with the CALeague admins to create a smaller/different version for competitive play.

back on topic: i think that what you want to hear gerbil is yes make the maps. convert them and make them playable on ET. But i warn you that you prolly just waste your time and that the ports will have a very short life span.

I did, but you just re-iterated your pint. Given the context of the thread is that these conversions are likely to happen regardless, it just seemed a bit irrelevant :wink: Personally I agree with you - I played clan RTCW for ages, and I don’t want these maps cropping up for clan play. However, I think well done conversions (as opposed to some of the obscenities we’ve already seen) would make for fun public play. What maps get used in competition is up to the leagues - if they choose a crap map, be it official, RTCW conversion or new custom, then it’s your job to let them know :slight_smile:

While I agree ET needs more competitive maps, I don’t see them coming from RTCW - leagues included tc_base because they thought it was a ‘safe’ option - but given the feedback they got, I’m sure they’ll think again :wink: Also, it’s incredibly hard to do a balanced clan map - in all RTCW’s time it got 1 or maybe 2 (te_ufo and te_frostbite were the only ones really worth much). Given ET is currently more geared to the public release, I wouldn’t expect any significant improvement for ET.
Some of us have an eye on it (church may get a proper overhaul), but even if we aim for that area, it’s very easy to miss it :frowning:

As for the ports having a short lifespan, well, that depends on entirely how good the port is. Also, of course, the map and its suitability for ET.
I’m actually thinking depot and trenchtoast might make great ET maps, and they aren’t exactly the most loved of clan maps from RTCW :wink:
In other words, thinking about it properly, rather than converting for converting’s sake and expecting the praise to flow. Oddly enough I’m suprised assault hasn’t been converted given how much it was loved by many (not me though, I hated that map - long range is not my thing). I don’t want to give anyone ideas though, so I’ll shut up now.

Apart from to mention - hello to the HappyPenguin crowd - spent many a happy and mad hour on those servers!

well atm tc_base is a hated map (at least most of the clans playing @ clanbase.com think like that). not because it’s a crappy conversion (u can plant mines on asphalt lol) but because it is an exausted map.

and about the few custom maps used in rtcw: there were less mappers, less players, less servers, and the overall quality of the maps was poor. Caen for example is beeing played on clanbase and imo it’s unbalanced just because the allied spawn is too damn near the objective. if the mapper that made the map (dunno who he is sorry) had first betatested it with some good clans that would be obvious. maybe switching axis spawn a bit forward would fix it. but it’s like supply depot: it has a bug where when the map starts some axis players spawn at the back of the map instead of the flag. why? (this might look stupid) i’ve found the error to be in the script:

it’s just plain stupid to release a map and call it “FINAL VERSION” with errors like this. i’ve emailed the author about this (for a new release 'cause i really luv the map - fast and simple) and got no answer.

on public servers is a shame to see maps like beach 1944 where i have for example 30 fps (i have an ati radeon 9700 pro).

i’m just trying to say that porting maps from rtcw is not worth while: assault i guess wasn’t converted yet because maybe snipers on ET are like guys with water pistols. Village is a fast map cool map i’ve played it and didn’t noticed any bugs. But i really would prefer that ET community mappers would simply create new and exciting maps instead of just creating lousy maps (yea on public servers no one really cares about the quality of the maps - it’s all about the number of players and the spamm on the server). and that’s a shame :frowning:

well… i dunno i guess you already made your mind to it. if so just don’t forget mp_castle or mp_sub or mp_destruction :expressionless:

there’s an ET german server running only rtcw ports (always empty tho).

Me neither - releasing a 100% bug-free map is pretty much impossible, but big bugs are a pain. All my maps have their fair share of bugs, but none of the ones classed by me as final have game-issue bugs :confused:
I do think far too many people release maps as final without proper testing - we’ve all seen maps come out as final, to be followed by final 2, even final 3 or beyond…
But then again, you’ve got to remember mapping is for fun - we don’t have the time, resources, and often the inclination to finish a map to a suitable standard.
I like to think I do, but that’s why Helms Deep has taken a year and counting to get to alpha 2 :wink:
Mapping can take forever - the simple way around this is to just chuck out the maps - hence the alarmingly large quota of maps that are simply a large terrain and some blocky buildings filled with lots of empty rooms (if any empty rooms).
RTCW map ports are a quick and easy way of getting reasonably high quality (ignoring gameplay) maps out. The problem being that my observations regarding mapping is equally valid for porting as it is for creating a new map, there’s still plenty of corners that can (and are) cut to get maps out quickly.

Sub’s an idea, no mines, no arty spam :slight_smile: I used to love that map, some of the craziest clan matches I ever had were on sub - it was simply chaos :smiley:
Can you imagine castle with double arties? It was bad enough in some leagues field ops FFE, air strike, grenade /kill repeat on the crypt, but now… :smiley:
Destruction was often fun (although unbalanced - how many times would axis block their passage to the main road cos it was only 1 person wide?), but again, double FFEs on the passages scares me. Having said that, on destruction at least they can’t do it indefinately since they have to get past it themselves to take the flags.

I dunno. It’s all down to time and effort I suppose. The more crap conversions that come out the more it annoys me, but also the less likely I would be to convert them myself (since of course the more popular ones get done (or have been done) first.

Hi Jah,

Caen did have a momentry beta testing of about a week before the final came out. I sent a heap of feedback into the guy, I think his tag is Zigzag or Zigzang or something like that. I think it is a heaps cool map but I agree about the balance. I found that the tank and command post can be pretty well locked down for almost the entire round with about four players against eight. This seems to happen repeatertiverly. It needs additional paths past the tank and I reckon that maybe the boat travelling down the river would make it fun aswell, and the area where the axis need to pick up the documents from sort of looks a little incomplete, IMO

I think a colaboration recreating depot, maybe just making Depot2 to work for ET because I really love the slight configuration change in the map made by my bud SuPeRdIeSeL, would be a good idea, it has plenty of arty capabilities throughout the map but very little mines space, which evens it out. Sometimes those matches lasted a minute, othershe end, and then they realized the time and left, and right after them, a new crowd filled the server up again and it all started over again, I think Depot was RTCW’s greatest map and it shouldn’t be neglected now as it was in RTCW, Happ Penguin was one of the very few that played that map, so did the guys at [FuN] but their server usually only had 30 guys playing, not enough imo :). So if anyone feels like working with me converting the of Depot2 version of the map to ET, then contact me and be sure to download the map from the link I provided in my previous post to check out how kickass it is :).

Kinda - firstly only if they leave the map stupidly unbalanced - eg base.
Secondly you need to bear in mind that many people haven’t played RTCW before ET.
