Room sizes??

(Theisy) #1

What height do people make their rooms usually??

I have just finished constructing my axis bunker and put the bunk beds in and realized that all my rooms were twice the height they should be :banghead:

I’ve now got to go and change all the stairs, ladders, doors etc etc etc

:angry:

The best tip I can give on getting scale right is to place an info_player_deathmatch in the room you are concerned about. This entity is roughly the size of the player. That way you can see if doors are wide enough, walls are tall (or short) enough, etc.

Once you have the scale right, just delete the info_player_deathmatch.

A good guide is to use the textures. 128 map units is really your average room height, and the doors are usually 96 map units high. Most of the textures are 256 pixels high (128 map units) for good reasons.

I read in a tutorial that 72 units is good for a person’s height which works perfectly out to about 1 unit per real world inch (considering a 6 foot person).

It hasn’t actually taken too long to do although I’ve now found by bunker is nearly twice the size it was supposed to be :lol:

64 in radient is a little less than 6 foot in game.

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to list some sizes to help people out:

According to sock an average room is 128 units. If we go on the assumption that an average room is basically 8 feet that makes 16 units = 1 foot. He also said doors are 96 units which would make them 6 feet, not very nice to walk through with 6 foot talk players. Taking a look at the goldrush map most of the doors are 112 units high which is about 7 feet (and I remember someone mentioning they made the doors 112 units high)

Revised based on some more calcualations from others:

1 foot = 12 units
1 person (6’) = 72 units
1 door (7’) = 84 units
1 room (8’) = 96 units

112 units (some doors in goldrush) is a little over 9’

I find this pretty good scale to work with as both the textures and feel to it work. Remember bunkers and some buildings might have 7’ ceilings (or lower) as space was generally cramped in WW2 era buildings.

k but what is a dm (decimeter) and a m(meter)?
10dm = 10cm(centimeter)
1m= 100cm

(Vetinari) #9

one inch is ~2.5 cm … now go and figure yourself :wink:

(kevinski) #10

I believe players are closer to 64 units in height.

(niko) #11

already checked this out

players = 72 units

made a test map with the varying heights that seem to be floating around

56 too small
64 too small
72 the very top of the helmet is just a smidgen above
96 too big…

While the players is 72 units (making 1 unit = 1 inch a handy reference for some of us) mapping to that scale will not always give good results. For example, doors will be very hard to get through, and ceilings too low for strafe jumping. In general, your rooms, doors and hallways should be large enough to allow for smooth movement.

kevinski, you might be thinking of Q3, where the players were smaller than RTCW.

(niko) #13

72 units = 6foot player = 72 inches

1 unit ~ 1 inch

(SCDS_reyalP) #14

Sigh. :banghead:

(FLY|Taiko) #15

lol

(SCDS_reyalP) #16

That wasn’t what I was :banghead: ing about

while 1 unit = 1 inch may be technically correct, in most cases it isn’t right. Maps made entirely to this scale will suck for gameplay. For example, two players will not be able to pass each other in a doorway, or even a normal hallway, and will not be able to jump indoors.

(niko) #17

do all people have an 8-9 foot verticle leaping ability??

even when carrying 60+lbs of gear?

(jah) #18

uber:soldiers do :wink:

(niko) #19

rofl, i am one of those uber types :stuck_out_tongue:

(vesuv) #20

What he’s saying is, if you take into account the fact that the average person stands at roughly six feet, they would need only a two foot “leaping ability” in order to attain eight feet. It is possible to jump two feet straight up, even with “60+lbs of gear” - which is probably not accurate for this game anyway, as the players are not carrying full battle gear, only small packs.
