Rock walls in 1.5, can I use patches?

(DerSaidin) #21

The other option is to just cover those joins with more patches…

I still discourage using patches for terrain. Have a play with r_lodCurveError (iirc thats the cvar) for values below the default (250). I cant remember that may be locked. The point is, terrain should be solid, not dynamic like patches.

I tweaked the terrain a bit more (quite extremely at some places) and texture blended it… Addition of some rocks (still wrong texture) and trees make it seem pretty nice already imo!

I haven’t noticed any unusual behaviour or ‘feeling’ when walking on the patches. It feels natural, not like something is different at all.

Your mountain terrain looks really great Flippy.
It looks so good that your road looks misplaced - it kind of ruins the picture.
This is a test map or…?

(Flippy) #24

This isn’t supposed to be a test map but it’s only this part of the map that looks even remotely like something like a map :stuck_out_tongue: The rest is non existing or not textures yet, so I guess you could say at this stage it’s still a test map yes.

I know the road looks out of place, I’m probably just going to make a blended dirt path instead of an actual road, but I just left it in from the “old” (non blended textures) terrain where it looked more in place :stuck_out_tongue:

  1. Work on making it vertical… it goes the same across all of that ridge, on the horizontal axis. Ew. I strongly suggest you add more vertical-ness to it.

  2. bend the road, make it a patch and a decal texture and bend it in places so its not so straight,

It is only level on the left side. The right side (as you can also see in one of the pictures) is pretty deformed vertically. I just haven’t gotten around to do the left side yet :stuck_out_tongue:

Where?
