Rock, Paper, Shotgun Interviews Ed Stern, Lives to Tell Tale

(Jamieson) #21

What is concerning is this

we have some stuff that will help gamepad and mouse aiming. It’s not an assist as such, but it means that once you’re following someone with your crosshairs, it becomes easier to follow them – “gravity wells”.

please say this wont be on the PC version, I don’t want it to be like the lock on from Section 8 which just killed compeition. Please don’t dub this game down.

A lot of people myself including regard any form of aim assist or lock on as near cheating it’s not that far off an aimbot.

when I die i want to know the person killed me because he/she is a better gamer, because he/she out skilled me or was just generally lucky or conincidence was on his/her side not because he/she got an aim assist where the game did allt he work for them.

Otherwise great interview just don’t mess the shooting/gameplay up.

I fear the brainthoughts fell out of my face-hole all wrong. There’s no aim-assist in Brink for mouse and keyboard. Was talking about consoles. Moo.

(Senyin) #23

That’s a relieve!
I started to look pale while reading jamieson’s quote…

This really disappoint me. I was really hoping that the aim assist for console won’t be noob out because I was planning to get it for both console and pc. Because I hardly play games on PC anymore because of several reasons. Way to noob the console version!!! Just when I though a developer is going to get something right and not follow the rest of the world. However, I have one question. Can a host disable this gavity feature on his/her server?

@darthmob
I’m not kidding. I don’t rely on anyone opinion to make judgement/decision. I don’t care how many review write up there is because I’ve seen countless good review on games only to find out that the author seems to be bought out or don’t know what he is talking about. Some gameplay footage won’t hurt.

(off topic) This is very true IGN have the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 rated as 9.5 “incredible” yet the video review doesn’t even mention the lack of dedicated servers and other issues and is most likely the console video just re-used for the PC review. Even the written review doesn’t even mention anything it lacks from COD4 MW1 and claims

Multiplayer raises the bar this time around with a huge emphasis on team play. Bring your friends, or get online and make some.

Lately reviewers have just been crap and increasingly reviewers are neglecting the PC portion of the playerbase.

looks like IGN were bought off, atleast the players were honest out of 1109 rating recived a overall rating at 2.2

It’s becoming increasingly hard to trust people in the gaming industry these days.

I was really hoping that the aim assist for console won’t be noob out because I was planning to get it for both console and pc.

The thing is if they did this it would be terrible. Controllers are just not good for movement and aiming at the same time. If SD did this the majority of console gamers would complain that the game feels horrible and wierd because they are so used to having aim assist by now.

It would make console ‘fanboys’ realise that PC gamers havn’t just been lying to them for years in saying that the mouse and keyboard combination is better for FPS’s though.

If you check the stats page from steam you can see there are barely over 100,000 players playing the pc version. Judging by the fact that they said it sold more than 4 million copies in the first 24 hours I’d say the pc gamers are quite angry.

This is good news. At least concerning the PC version. I know zXSwordXz isn’t happy but perhaps you should read my previous explanation.

Not to add that the game has already got hacks, has already been cracked and has dedicated servers. I wouldn’t be suprised if a good number of those 100,000 hadn’t pirated the game. will be interesting to see if IW realise they messed up big time and reintroduce dedicated servers. I’ll be more pissed if they try to charge for it.

To think I don’t even want to play the game either lol.

(Floris) #28

Considering there are 24 hours in a day, and people will probably play CoD:MW2 MP around 3 hours a day, that’s still 800.000 copies, excluding the people who don’t even play the MP (by comparison, the PC version of ET:QW probably sold less than 600.000). I take no responsibility for the accuracy of my calculations.

DD, we’re not particularly spread-alicious. I think everyone will be fairly happy with the balance on that stuff.

Sword, I’m really surprised to hear someone ask for aim assistance being off on a console shooter. My concern about that being a server setting would be that the majority of players who would come into that match would think the game is literally broken (as Jamie points out above, turning aim assist off completley almost destroys analog stick playability).

Now of course, individual players will be able to turn off aim assist, no doubt there (so you could have a friendly game where everyone agrees to turn it off). As for a server setting, jury’s out on that.

Out of curiosity, what’s everyone else think about that? Also, would love to hear about other server settings everyone would like to see

(DoubleDigit) #30

That would be correct unless I was reading the peak per day numbers, which unfortunately for them, I was.

(zXSwordXz) #31

Hi Rahdo,

I do understand that everyone will have the option to turn off aim assist. However, I really think it would be great server feature for the console. This way, everyone that joins the server will be playing at the same level. Host can always advise the players that aim assist is off. Not that I don’t trust my friends, however during a competitive game one may be tempted to turn on aim assist to gain an edge. Plus, there will always be players other than my friends playing. Server option provide more control. Another problem I notice with aim assist for console is, You’re about to shoot someone, and then someone else runs past dragging your aimier over and making you miss them both. In SOF2 for xbox, you were able to pick your target out of a bunch because there were no aim assist.

In addition to that, I would also like to have the option as a host to disable certain weapons. Take Halo for example, all the weapons are available to players but the host can choose what weapon can be use in the server. That is something I really admire about Halo developers.

Thank you,
zXSwordXz

We all know how consolified the PC version of CoD:MW2 is, so perhaps SD can make a statement by PCifying BRINK’s console version?

@DoubleDigit: I see, 200k is still a lot though (about 15 times the daily W:ET peak).

(zXSwordXz) #33

Well, from a business stand point it would be wise to make both PC and Console great (more sales).

(Rahdo) #34

Sword, very interesting feedback. Out of curiosity, do you know of any other console shooters that have made auto-aim off a server feature in addition to a client feature? Would love to try that out and see what kind of effect it has on a shipped game, before I commit either way.

And how much publicity did W:ET had? Close to 0?

If I remember this correctly, one of my friends tried to convince me that console are kick ass game machines and the controller is better than mouse and keyboard so we played some previous Call of Duty title. I remember the game had this option when creating a server…

As far as his convincing goes, I swore I’d never touch another console again and if I ever end up president, I’ll ban consoles in my country. HAHA

(DoubleDigit) #37

This is not console only gameplay sugestions.

(darthmob) #38

Oh sorry! I mixed you up with zXSwordXz who was talking about aim assist which is a console only feature.

(namlot) #39

I would prefer to have an aim assist when playing Brink on consoles, since I am primarily a PC gamer, but play consoles casually. Maybe it’s just 'cus I’m crap with an analog stick?

(DarkangelUK) #40

I don’t see why the ‘hardcore console crew’ can’t just disable it themselves and have it on by default. If it’s so bad, wouldn’t it give them an edge over those that use it? I’ve seen personal reasons for not wanting it, but i’ve not seen a valid global reason for having it disabled or non-existant.
