Road Curve Brushes - How was this done?

(Eh?) #1

Here’s a technique (used in Radar) that has me stumped:

Two brushes that form a nice seamless road curve:

Both brushes selected to show brush boundaries.

Brush B selected; only 4 vertex points.

I’m specifically interested in how one creates that 4-vertex flat brush (brush B). It looks pretty easy to line up with the simple patch mesh that is Brush A, but I can’t figure out how to create anything like Brush B. Any suggestions?

The outside edge is a 3x3 simple patch and the inside patch is a bevel. Select both and make sure all control points line up correctly as the diagram above shows.

Thanks for the help, Sock. I’m still pretty new to this, and can’t figure out how to get a bevel with only 4 vertex points. Trying obvious ways like using the “Curve | Bevel” menu item just results in brushes with nine vertex points. Could you elaborate a bit on how a brush with only 4 is created?

Probably missing something obvious… :???:

No you are not missing anything, its me being silly and getting my terms mixed up.

  1. Create a bevel from the curves menu. This should create a patch on its side with a top down view looking like a 90 degree section of a circle.

  2. Select the curve menu again and choose “end caps”. This will bring up a second menu with four options. You want the type called “bevel”. I know its a stupid name because its similiar to the bevel option on the main curves menu.

  3. Select the new set of patches and ungroup them by right clicking on the 2d window and selecting “ungroup entity” option. Now you can select all the different patches and select the top one with 4 control points. (Like the one used in radar)

Thanks again, Sock! That was exactly what I was looking for. Hopefully this thread will be of use to other newbies, as I really never would have figured this out without your help. To get the four bevel options, btw, the menu item on my version of Radiant (1.4.0) is labeled “Cap Selection”.

My list of “people to whom I owe a beer” is going to be quite long before this map is done…
