Rhino is Cool. How do SD could make Rhino KOOLER

(GatoCommodore) #1

just logged in this morning, drinking my coffe, on my office chair.

looking at my blings in the loadout section and carefully choosing mercs to play.

i saw Rhinos right and left getting butchered by fragger and skyhammer.

thousand yard stare.jpg

but seriously, rhino could be very powerful in the right hands but its just not enough at the moment.
he lacks the dank-ness of the rest of the merc pool.

How SD should make him better as a functional merc.

I mean if a rhino is getting killed constantly they kinda don’t know how to play. The problem is that Rhino is too slow for the game, that his playstyle completely ruins the fast paced gameplay the game has. I would either suggest to slightly increase his movement speed when using the minigun, or give him a separate ability to give him more mobility. Perhaps a charge if some sorts.

He is Rhino after all.

SD doesn’t need to do anything, you do : learn. to. play. him.

That’s it. End of thread.

i want to ask your opinion regarding on does rhino compares to the rest of the merc pool?
i mean, it may not be as agile as fragger.
it may not be as annoying as thunder
it may not be as useful as engie in general.
he does slow the game. only good with pocket medic like aura (which can be countered with phantom crouching on the next room)

i tried to play fat scout but fails miserably because hitbox as big as the EV.

After having extensive playtime with Rhino (I impressed a friend who is thinking of inviting me to play competitive with him, I was playing Rhino…), Rhino doesn’t need any changes right now.

He’s got the highest health pool in the game and shotguns, how do you use that? Positioning is key, Rhino depends on it more than a Phantom does. Staying in a CQC engagement is important to win engagements because the shotgun 2 shots everyone with competent aim and no one can out damage you in the scenario since 200 health is too much for one person to take on.

You’re still mobile as Rhino, many times I’ve jumped around in areas with large ceilings and people can’t track me as I switch to my minigun and land fully revved then mow them down. He’s slow but that doesn’t mean you can’t move and that’s what surprises people a lot, some players that play against me note that I fly around as Rhino a bit too much XD

The playstyle revolves around playing fat scout and jumping off of walls when you need to move, once you find a place that you can lockdown you use the minigun. Minigun should only be used if you need range, can lockdown an objective like Bastion, or get an amazing flank on the enemy team’s back.

If I can fix shadow play and record my Rhino gameplay I’ll post a video sometime demonstrating the idea behind playing him.

I hate to do this, I really do, but you forced my hand.

EU Lvl 20 + stopwatch, no aura, not Underground, not an exception.

Again sorry to be mean, but I have to : THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH RHINO, GIT GUD WITH HIM THAT’S IT.

@Dieu-Sama why do you think K/D is the deciding factor of whether a merc is good. Skill allows you to do well with any merc. The way you know if a merc is balanced or not is by telling how easy it is to do well; if it is too easy then the merc is OP or strong, if they are too hard for the amount of reward they get then they are too weak. This is the case with Rhino at anything past close range, anything else it has a worse ttk than most guns, but his hp makes up for it in some situations. All I want is a slight speed increase so he is a bit more able to close the gap on offense.

Trust me, all you want is to re-read sgtCrookyGrin’s comment again to understand this is not needed.

oh wow, thats chapel? i thought rhino nearly unuseable in there. the range are simply too far for the minigun.

Rhino does not need a buff, but i will take it anyway. Who doesn’t love a free buff for his fav merc?

(hoyes) #11

I get the idea of ‘shotgun is to break the position, minigun is to hold the position’ but due Rhinos hitbox and speed it makes it extremely difficult without a medic. He is just too fat and slow. Any competent player will be able to hit a Rhino hopping about, due to him being so fat, so that tactic is not very effective unless you are at full hp, where you have a bit more leeway about how much hp you can afford to lose.

He doesn’t need a lot. Just a bit.

Rhino is usable if you pay attention to positioning, in fact that’s what makes him interesting.

Most characters are mindless action cause you always perform decent at all ranges with an SMG or AR, a fat guy with a shotgun means you gotta use that brain of yours to pay attention to where you should be in any fight.

It’s very hard at first but you just gotta keep a note somewhere to remind you, “is the position in favor for you?” After playing enough you’re not going to need the note anymore and you’ll perform exceptionally well.

(SiegeFace) #14

Everything this guy said, he is very effective in the right hands, and such a source of whimsey when you play him right.

There are at least 8 places I can think of (including all stages of the map for attackers or defenders) where he can go to town on everybody. The hallway at the start, the 2 story building that covers the chokepoint at the overpass, the connector room near the mg, the delivery station at the last objective, the mid connector that leads you to that bus stop… etc etc

I just realised how little callouts I know for this game.

Rhino is a noobie merc, if you want it or if you don’t.
