Rented for a Week Now What?

(TVSUCKS) #1

Well,

I rented the game for a week and now I have to decide whether to buy it. In some ways I really liked it. Character control was excellent. Customization was varied. The challenges put a new spin on the game as a way to get attachments for your weapons, but I only did the first level for each one. And I liked the overall design of the game from the standpoint of completing objectives. Just adds so much more to the game than a simple run and gun, but maintains the energy of run and gun.

Issues that concern me are more related to core gameplay. It seemed that it was very difficult to achieve objectives because everyone naturally camped the main objective. I did have a successful game on-line once I believe and, ironically, it was on mission 2, which I was never able to complete in campaign mode.

The gameplay was fun, I just wonder if I would get frustrated over time with limited success in completing missions. Don’t get me wrong, you don’t want it to be easy, but you also don’t want it to be nearly impossible either. I also wonder how many people will keep playing. ALthough it doesn’t take many to keep filling lobbies. I played Medal of Honor and there were only about 7,ooo people on-line on all platforms at any given time but I never had trouble until it got late at night, I am in AZ.

So, I am on the fence. Luckily I had a credit for the rental and I have $15 in best buy rewards points which would take some off the price. I am actually leaning toward trying it but wonder if it would just end sitting in the cabinet.

In any case I had some fun with the game, very interesting concept.

Take care,
john

Brink is a very deep game. I learn new stuff every time I play. Have you tried the cover lean yet? Or EMP bombs? What about a weapon combo like Euston/Kross? Do you like High Capacity Mags or Duct Tape Mags? Did you get a chance to play as a Heavy yet? Did you get a chance to get a character to level 20?

The game really shines in multiplayer. If you have some friends that play or there are local people (low ping) that play in your area and you can get some matches going then I’d say go for it.
The objectives become pretty easy to do once you’re used to what you need to do and where on each map. Defence always has a slight advantage but you’ll be defending roughly 1/2 the time anyway so it evens out.
You can also play co-op which is humans v bots. Bots tend to camp less, but with a good team on your side getting to, holding and completing the objectives is normally not a major issue.

Like I say: if you can get some multiplayer then go for it. If not then it comes down to how much you enjoy fighting bots.

Btw: there should be a DLC coming out this month that adds another 2 maps, a bit more customisation (2 new outfits) and 2 new weapon customizations.

Ya, the depth is the draw. It os a very unique game in a world full of cookie cutters. Having only played a few hours much of what you ask about I have not done - which I’m thinking is your point. I did noticed that I was feeling the fog lift a bit even after only a few hours on the game. This is pretty normal, but I think Brink has a lot more to learn than most games of this type, which is a good thing.

I live on the edge of Phoenix, I would imagine I would not have too much trouble getting games. ANd adding friends would help in getting games with more people than bots. I think I am basically getting one other person in a game, the rest are bots.

Is there voice chat on an Xbox 360? I think I read a post here where someone indicated that setting up a private game and inviting friends is serving as a lobby structure for now, correct? Thats one thing I don’t understand, why would anyone in this day and age not put a lobby system in a video game. And Brink is not the only recent game to do so. SOCOM4 did the same thing and Medal of Honor had a weak system.

For online against other people you select Freeplay. Objective or Stopwatch. Then you have several choices of Match type. The one I choose is called Big Team. There are other types you can try like Competitive for 5v5. Basically bots are in multiplayer as a kind of place holder until enough people join. There is no Lobby like some FPS games.

We have a group of guys that will often get together to play online from this forum. I play on xbox. Here is the thread. http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28381

You can leave your GT if you want to be involved. Just add someone from the list and you should be able to connect to any of us through Friend of a Friend on Xbox live!

On a side note: I am hoping that they incorporate some kind of Clan Lobby; a way to get two groups facing off. Or something like that!

I didn’t find Brink that deep at all. Maybe compared to other shooters of this generation it is, but its still a pretty shallow experience. The game is basically smg rushing and nade spam on choke points. And since the guns don’t shoot in a pattern almost all depth is gone with the game. I really like brink but you can’t say its an amazing game in its current state.

And since there has been no work on a sdk it’s not looking good for this game. Let’s not forget, they intended to charge us for the first dlc at first. SD is a mixed bunch to me right now. I want to hope they get their act together and polish brink up to be a real pc shooter, but the lack of input from them is a little disheartening.

You can break down anything into basic terms. Does not mean that it isn’t deep.

I think you meant Call of Duty…you did say shallow experience right? A game with killstreaks is the very definition. Basically, replace Brink with COD and your post makes much more sense!

Well for me this game isn´t deep in the sense of skill movement like tfc, quakelive and etc, its basicly press button and auto pilot on, about aiming and stuff no real skill too its basicly spray and pray, this game is only more deep then the other fps out there in the sense of team work and coordination.

Which is exactly what the genre needs.
