If you are active and focus on your missions, you can easily get ~10k credits every day, which means a new merc every week + credits to spare.
Most people already have all the mercs (or at least the ones they want) + a decent bronze (or better) card for each merc by the time they reach level 20.
I just wish there were more things to spend credits on. They feel useless to me now since I have all the mercs and I don’t want to use the crafting system RNG trying to get good cobalts for mercs I never play

If you do the mission, take a break, play again once the mission is refreshed, you could easily earn 3000-6000 in a day

Missions are indeed your primary source of credits.
It is also worth noting that additional credits (up to 2000) can be earned by completing your daily bonuses.
Play a match in every game mode and make sure to win a match as well to pick them up.
