[Recon/Engineer Hybrid Merc] Discord

(Mr-Penguin) #1

“Am I a loudmouth? Of course not! I can make sure you never have to hear my voice again if you really want to!”

Discord
Class- Recon/Engineer
HP- 100
Speed- 430

Profile-
Praised for using unconventional policing methods in the aftermath of the Dirty Bomb attacks on London, Discord and her paramilitary police friends were efficient at their jobs, whether it be a stealthy extraction or clearing a hideout. At one point, they were hired to go and capture a prominent CDA official in an infirmary for victims of the attacks. Turns out that carefully tuned sound waves that rattle eyes and bones kill intensive care patients. After that disastrous operation, everybody on the team was eliminated shortly afterwards, except for her. Then the voicemails from MercServ kept coming and coming. Sounds like a conspiracy (pun intended).

Discord specializes in controlling the flow of information on the battlefield. Her handheld Acoustic Disruptor is perfect for spotting enemies at short range as well as disrupting their vision and hearing, while her deployable Antiphase Emitter can silence team movement and temporarily hide objective progress.

Acoustic Disruptor
Cooldown- 22 sec
Duration- 5 sec spot duration, 7 sec “Rattled” effect duration
Discord takes out her handheld long-range acoustic device and fires a “charge” of sound (high and low frequencies not actually represented in game*) in a tight cone. There is a .5 second warmup time before the charge fires. Spotting range is roughly 15 meters, but the AD is able to spot enemies through walls and floors. Using the AD will also spot Discord to all enemies.

Spotted enemies will also receive the “Rattled” effect, which makes their view slightly blurry and disables all HUD elements as well as muffling all sounds they hear, including objective notifiers (Defuse the bloody C4, etc.). Hearing and vision come back slowly over the 7 second duration, and healing will reduce the current duration by three seconds.

Antiphase Emitter
Cooldown- 40 sec
Duration- 10 sec
Discord takes out a medium sized cylindrical device and plants it on the ground, immediately generating a noise cancelling area that is slightly smaller than Aura’s Health Station radius. All noises made within the AoE by allies are inaudible to enemies outside.

The most important part of the AE is that when you or an ally plants/repairs/disarms on any objective while inside its AoE, all audio and visual objective notifiers are delayed for the enemy team by 5 second.

Brand-New Tools
Discord performs objectives 1.5 times faster than non-engineers. ((ballpark estimate here, but Discord does stuff faster than non-engineers, but slower than actual engineers)

Weapons-
Primaries- Hochfir, Crotzini, SMG-9
Secondaries- Caulden, M9, S&W
Melee- Standard three

Personality- Discord is a massive loudmouth and enjoys shouting and talking incessantly as well was taunting opponents. Occasionally, she can be very quiet and reserved.

Sample Quotes-
“Screaming, and then silence. The sound of forgiveness.”- Finishing a downed enemy
“ONE. TWO. THREE. All dead!”- Triple Kill
“Shh… nobody will ever miss you.”- On kill

Notes
[spoiler]
Discord is designed to be a more utility oriented engineer capable of covering up allied movements and stealthily performing objectives on the offense while still being able to spot and debuff enemies on both sides. This was basically a modified mish-mash of two previous ideas, Parabola (parabolic spotting microphone) and Mute (Mute Charge). I’m open to feedback! Thanks for reading!

The first ability sounds(no pun intended) like a meld of Thunder and VassilI, so probably bad idea. The second one is really cool though, I like it.

Acoustic Disruptor is quite different than the HBS. It’s a focused, single direction spot rather than a thrown AoE device. On the other hand, the effect is like Thunder’s, but there’s no flash and no slow, giving opponents a chance to fight back while still disrupting their vision and hearing.

A more accurate comparison would be Redeye and Thunder.

Duuuuuuuuddddeeee… This is really cool… like really truly cool and original. I totally dig this.

First ability is unique in comparison to something like Aimee’s Snitch. The rattled effect would be good as it would use the less well know part of Thunders Grenade. Just one thing: the spotting functionality means that Discord would actually probably be a Recon class.

Actually, in retrospect, Discord’s first ability may be a little harsh, being able to fire it off quickly without consequences. Perhaps some sort of misuse consequence (like the effect reflecting back at you if used against a wall at the wrong angle). I also hope that it’s not so easy to spam like Phoenix’s healing ability, with a small post-casting delay to give effected players a split second chance to escape before Discord starts shooting.

Not sure about the second ability. I think it would be just fine if all noises generated inside the range of the device are muted. DB’s audio is very important to gameplay, so I feel that just the audio effect is good. The anti-spotting area basically destroys the purpose of several abilities in the game pertaining to the already fairly weak Recon classes, and the delayed notifications is a little game breaking. I think just sticking with a sound cancelling device is an effective secondary ability.

Weapons seem alright, if suspiciously close to Nader’s arsenal. I would switch one of the weapons with the Dreiss or Blishok, just for variation and that traditional recon range.

Another note on the Recon suggestion: Recons are usually either stealthy (Phantom, Red-eye) or ranged (Aimee, Vassili). I think Discord fits in the Recon category not because she’s particularly ranged, but because she’s stealthy. And the spotting thing mentioned before.

Fan quotes: ‘They never hear it coming’ ‘What, did you say something? It didn’t hear you. And you probably didn’t hear me’ ‘Muted.’ ‘SILENCE! I KILL YOU!’

I know nationality shouldn’t define the Merc, but what would Discord’s nationality be? Also, out of curiosity, why is she called Discord?

I’d like it more if the mute charge type of thing was the only ability, just think about how good it could be in conjunction with a proxy/phantom against audio aware players, that might be too good, no?

I like the idea, but i don’t want to be rude but the name really dosen’t fit him, but still the idea is cool.

I was thinking of a short charge up time for the Disruptor prior to it firing off. I was also thinking that the self-spot on use could also extend to nearby allies, but that may be a bit too punishing.

Might remove anti-spotting. The problem is that the muted area is stationary, making it nearly useless on a rapidly moving offense. Objective delaying is meant to punish unaware teams- you should be checking what’s going on on the objective at all times. As long as somebody notices the AoE of the Emitter or the device itself, they’ll probably destroy it and attempt the disarm.

Close quarters spotting ability necessitates close-quarters weaponry.

I was thinking a loudmouthed American, since there’s not that many confirmed American mercs.

As for the name, “discord” means to have a “lack of harmony between notes sounding together.” This refers to the sound that such an acoustic device would have in real life, since carefully tuned infrasound can make your eyeballs and bones vibrate. Add some high frequency noise to make your ears miserable, and then you’ll have a pretty awful sounding noise.

Also, my original plan for the primary ability was to make it disable those red and blue auras around teammates and enemies so that people would be confused and start shooting the wrong things, as well as creating fake objective notifications to further confuse enemies. Of course, that’d get real annoying and real old really fast, so I opted not to do that.

Thanls for the feedback!

Almost forgot to respond to this… :stuck_out_tongue:

Discord is meant to be a merc heavily based around her team. After all, that’s what she does: cover up their tracks and open up an offensive. And in the event your team is being useless, you have a slightly faster objective speed to ninja-plant or something.

Minor edits made, primarily removing the spotting immunity for allies in the Antiphase Emitter.

disruptor - spots through walls and gives a concussed effect… Maybe reduce it to JUST the concussed effect, so it would require some prediction and intuition. This also takes away from thunder a bit, since it can be used through walls.

antiphase - The idea of a sound-nulling area is quite nice. It would have to be used in conjunction with a coordinated team to be useful, however. - If given to an engineer, It may be decent when planting c4 or repairing
