Im wanting to get a brand spanking new pc with my taxes(not sure how much yet but i expect 1000+) and if I do what are your recommended specs.

Also incase I have to divert that money to other things for those of you who have played the ps3 beta how smoothly does it run?

Thanks now what about this Ultra Triton SE Its 450 dollars and uses an interesting trick to make it more powerful but im not sure as to the efficacy of this hack since I havent tinkered with a pc in 7 years.

From Pc gamer’s review of the ultra triton SE
Inside the Ultra Triton SE the component list is almost identical to the more expensive Advent CBE1401. It has the same Phenom II processor, the same graphics card and the same allowance of RAM.

“The Phenom II X2 550 processor is unusual, however, in that it’s not a dual core. It’s a quad core with two of the cores turned off, usually because of faults in the redundant cores or to meet demand for dual core chips. Cyberpower’s cunning trick has been to turn on the disabled cores.”

So would you guys say this thing is a safe bet or what?

I have a Phenom II X2 555 BE unlocked to a quad core. Works fine, you only need a motherboard that supports unlocking of cores.

Edit: Take a look at this articlehttp://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/535501-official-amd-k10-5-core-cache.html.

It comes preunlocked so id assume that its motherboard is compatible?..

Edit:Thank you I enjoyed that article alot.

And did you unlock it yourself?

Yes, I used a modded driver for the motherboard but now one can just download the latest drivers and change settings by himself on the boot screen setup, for Biostar motherboards at least.

It uses an onboard graphics unit do you suggest(I imagine you would) I upgrade it and get a better card. Also what card thats more than adequate but not too pricey?

Also if anyone can go to this link and give me some suggestions on things to add and or replace I would greatly appreciate it!!!

actually it has an AMD/ATI Radeon 5000 series card, the onboard is bypassed according to the review in your first link, but depending where you live, you could build the same thing cheaper, around $400 without O/S

Ms and yeah I could easily(Im starting to relearn the language of awesome and not so awesome processors and gpu’s) cept the unlocking of the cores thing sounds dubious and Id hate to try to unlock them and it not work since that is based on luck.

With this it seems they will(I guess) keep unlocking cores till they get one thats quad core and then sell it to me! :D…hopefully…

Take a walk over the sandy bridge, The second gen intel i5/i7 and are very responses to overclocking.

it’s gonna cost mmm… maybe couple hundred more to build it yourself. but IMO well worth it and should last a very long time.
if you need any answers for value parts just ask, I was planning on building a rig for when brink comes out, but decided it would be worth my best interests till the end of the year or possibly early next year to get into the hardware change over of that time.

unlocking the cores is 2 clicks in bios, after talking to guys at computer shop I use, all the later 555s are quads and $87 here, suitable SB710 motherboard is less than $100, $65 on a good sale. Add 4 gig of RAM for $50 and a Seagate 500 gig HD for $40 and you got a great upgrade

btw, Radeon cards seem to be the best low/middle value video cards
