Real Money Prices

(Backuplight) #1

TL;DR: The real money prices for in game additions is high enough to be discouraging, even to someone who wants to support the game with a purchase now and then.

I didn’t want to start “another” of these threads, but most of the threads I’m seeing are talking about the credit price for mercs rather than the actual real money costs. This tends to come up in the comments, instead, but I really want to bring some more attention to it. In short, I want to give this game some money. Maybe even regularly. But as it stands, there aren’t that many things that are appealing. A quick break down of this is below.

Mercs
In the UK, it costs a whopping £7.99 for a single 50k credit merc (that’s $12.26 USD). Even though 50k credits is a fair sum and I’d rather be putting those credits towards loadout upgrades, the real money price of mercs means I’m just saving credits for that instead.

Elite Cases
It’s £3.99 ($6.12 USD) for a single elite case. That’s a bit steep, but even more importantly, that’s £3.99 for an 80% chance to get a silver loadout card for one of the available mercs. As many people probably feel right now, I have my few favourite mercs, so the odds of getting a loadout I actually want are not looking great.

Credit Boosters
I actually bought the 12 hour one of these thinking they gave more than they do - the gain is absolutely not worth the cost based on the amount of credits you get, but they’re a great idea.

Loadouts/Bundles
These I’m not sure I have an opinion on. I like the idea of being able to buy a specific card (£2.79 / $4.28 USD) or a complete set of 9 bronze cards (£15.99 / $24.51 USD). Whilst these aren’t compelling purchases for me, I have nothing against them really. Perhaps others can elaborate on the system if they feel differently.

As it stands, I probably won’t be buying any more than I have until something changes. I’ll be playing the game, absolutely, but I would love to have something worth spending a little money on each month. As it stands, maybe - one day - I’ll grab a merc, but if their prices were lower it would definitely be more appealing more quickly. I’ve said before in other posts that how the community reacts to these prices will govern whether the prices stay, but I just wanted to express my thoughts on the matter here too.

I’d like to add:

The bundle in the closed beta was 20 dollars for 5 mercs and 35k. It was stupid not to buy that. 20 dollars is such an afterthought. (2 out of my 4 friends bought the 20 dollar pack)

But since it bumped up to 30 dollars, that’s a really hefty amount. Even if you get those elite cases— it still doesn’t feel worth it. (Maybe because the elite cases don’t feel worth it to me anyways)

My one friend was considering buying the starter pack for 20, but now it’s bumped up he’s not going to buy it at all. It’s a lot harder to justify it.

20 was the perfect price point for someone who is on the fence of a free to play game. Especially for a STARTER pack. I hope you guys add other bundles that hit the 20 dollar price point. Heck, add a 2-3 mercs for 15 dollar cheap-o starter pack? 15 Dollars is the same price point as CSGO. Add a proxy and some other merc to balance the pack out so they can be competitive in any game.

Then…
Bam, less complaints on “grinding”. Less complaints on “pay2win” and now you got them hooked into the ecosystem.

Yup. Essentially, you’re paying the extra $10 for 2 elite cases (worth $10 in game) and an extra 15k credits. Perhaps the fact the cases aren’t very appealing (to me) is what ruins this bundle, but I went from recommending the starter bundle to everyone I knew to not even mentioning this new one.

I agree, I think they are shooting themselves in the foot. I’ve already spent more on the game than I would on any f2p game, but that’s because I’m a splash damage fanboy. The current prices make it hard for impulse buyers. You never want that, as those would be your biggest chunk of income. Make it very easy for impulse buyers to not even think about the pricing.

I don’t know why the packs couldn’t co-exist. The starter pack had a lot of value at a reasonable price and the new pack really doesn’t add a ton of value and instead gives you two RNG chances of getting nothing you’d want anyway.

So I definitely do not agree with the new $30 price point as I had some friends that would totally go for $20 but they won’t even look at the game for $30.
